Journal Entry 1 by AgnesXNitt from Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Monday, June 7, 2010
''I hereby bet Tony Hawks the sum of one hundred pounds that he cannot hitch hike round the circumference of Ireland, with a fridge, within one calender month.'
A foolhardy attempt to win a drunken bet led to Tony Hawks having one of the best experiences of his life. Joined by his tusty travelling companion-cum-domestic appliance he found himself in the midst of a remarkable, inspirational and at times, downright silly adventure.
This is the record of the unlikely pair's fortunes as they made their way from Dublin to Donegal, from Sligo through Mayo, Galway, Clare, Kerry, Cork, Wexford, Wicklow and back again to Dublin.
In their month of madness Tony ahd his fridge surfed together, entered a batchelor festival, and one of them had sex without the other one knowing. The fridge got christened and they even met the poorest King on Earth. Far from being an encumbrance, the fridge became a momentary focus for the people of Ireland, growing into a personality in its own right, and bring people together wherever it went.
Against all the odds, 'Round Ireland With a Fridge' is one of the most inspirational stories you will ever read. Join the fearless pair as they battle on towards Dublin and a breathaking finale that is both moving, uplifting and a fitting conclusion to the whole ridiculous affair.'

Bought in a BOGOF in a charity shop in St. Ives of Saturday 5th June 2010.
I started a ring for this book ages ago and it got lost en-route so I will be re-starting the ring as soon as I can trace the next reader!

The book arrived today. Thank you for re-starting this bookring! I'm looking forward to read this novel, but I have one book to finish before I get started.

I enjoyed this book!! It brought back good memories of my own 3 weeks travel through Ireland a few years ago. Well, not hitch-hiking, but back-packing - kind of inter-rail by bus. Going where ever the next bus was going, preferably to places with funny names. They were not hard to come by :)

Thanks again, AgnesXNitt, for sharing this book. It travels on tomorrow.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

The book is on its way to Minnesota.

Found this one in my PO Box this afternoon. I have one other read in front of it, so it shouldn't tarry too long.

Journal Entry 8 by arugh48187 at Minneapolis, Minnesota USA on Tuesday, August 10, 2010
This was a very refreshing read. It was nicely written by somebody who could appreciate the lighter side of life. I only wish I was as carefree as Tony was. Though even in my wildest youth I was a uber-planner and would not have done well letting the cards fall as they may. My favorite part was the description of a night in a hostel. Thankfully my experience with hostels was never that bad, but I could appreciate his sleepless night anyway.

I have the address of the next reader and it should go out on my next post office run. Thanks for sharing.

Just came in the mail! Looking forward to this one. I'd given up on this ring so I was quite pleased when I found out it had been re-started!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Oh I loved this book. I loved it for the pointlessness of Hawks' quest; the utter randomness of it all. I want to find a copy to give to pass around my group of friends. Why? Because it's something we'd be likely to do too. I'm not sure what that says about us. Hawks' writing is fun and amusing - it's not going to win the Pulitzer prize but it's a great read for entertainment purposes. Thanks so much for sharing!

9/23 - I sent this off to 6of8. Many, many thanks for agreeing to send this across the pond when you're finished, as I'm a broke student right now and can't afford it :-)

Received in the mail from Llednyl on Saturday afternoon. I am in the middle of about 4 other books right now that I really need to finish, so, of course, I started reading it right away. Should be finished either tonight or tomorrow. I appreciated the warning on the front cover -- so laugh-out-loud funny that it should not be read if sitting alone in a public place. Some parts of it definitely have been -- I keep startling the cat -- and the rest of it just makes you grin.

Excited to have a chance to read this one and glad I could help out my fellow BCers by relaying from U.S. to U.K.

Finished this book this morning and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think the thing I liked most was the philosophy of life he learned from traveling with the fridge -- when he tried to draw attention to himself and celebrate his own accomplishments, no one else cared; when he was just going about the simple task of doing what he had set out to do, he was warmly embraced by total strangers and got to truly enjoy the moment. I wonder if Siorse Molloy (the fridge) is still alive and well -- like Tony, I developed a real affection for it over the course of the adventure.

Will send across the pond as soon as I hear back from Vamperstein8782 with an address.

Journal Entry 14 by wing6of8wing at Silver Spring, Maryland USA on Friday, October 22, 2010
Just popped this one into the post to Vamperstein8287 -- US Post Office says 3-5 business days -- don't know how that will translate once it gets across the pond. Sorry it took so long to get this sent -- once I returned from holiday on Monday I had a bit of traveler's tum -- only now feeling semi-human.

Thanks for letting me participate in this book ring -- I really enjoyed the book!

Not the best travel journal I've read, but certainly entertaining enough and considering it all started with a bet which in the end didn't even cover expenses...

The adventures were random and certainly everything I would expect from a country where the barmen will continue to serve you even when you've admitted you're "more than a little bit drunk" (apparently I hadn't fallen off the floor yet, so I wasn't considered drunk by any stretch of the Irish imagination!). I particularly liked the surfing episode.

Will return to AgnesXNitt when I next see her (hopefully Thursday).

Received back today in the post at work - thanks Madama DiNozzo aka Vamperstein8782 :)
I'm really pleased and grateful that this book completed the ring eventually, especially taking into account the 2 year hiatus when the original copy disappeared somewhere in the Nordics...
Still, slightly battered, but home! Home!
I see the film of this book is being made and will be out soon, so for now this book will go on my AVLs :)
Thanks to all participants, with special mention of thanks to Llednyl for her patience and 6of8 for stepping in at a moments notice and international shipping.
And an early Merry Christmas to you all :))
