of all of the Buddhist books i've read, this one takes a rather negative perspective. for a westerner aiming at better understanding her individual practice, this could be a good book. a nice set of "dos" and "donts," but not in a list form. The author outlines the four truths of Buddhist practice, then unpacks ways people must follow these truths. This book unties loop-hopes westerners have placed on Buddhist practice.

But--The Raft is Not The Shore (Bergan & Nhat Hahn) or The Art of Happiness (Dali Lama) do better work at with this same project.
