'Outsiders don't fare well in Cypress Springs...
When journalist Avery Chauvin returns home after twelve years, it's as if time has stood still. Yet for her everything has changed. Devastated by her father's suicide, Avery has taken a leave of absence from work to come back and put his affairs in order. but in truth, she has come home for answers. How could her father, a physician who dedicated himself to preserving life, have taken his own?
Then Avery meets a newcomer in town, investigating whispered rumours fo strange happenings and a mysterious group called The Seven. Soon the events of the past and present take on a terrifying new meaning. A woman is found brutally murdered. An outsider disappears and neighbours go missing in the night.
Determined to know the truth, Avery discovers that each layer of deceit she exposes is somehow linked to an unsolved meurder - and to her father. Uncertain where to turn and who to trust, she must face the fact that in this peaceful town a terrible evil resides, protected - until now - by the power of silence.'

A bit MHC in feeling from the blurb from the back, this one was given to me by one of my security colleagues. A new to me author.

A very creepy book! My goodness, although this wasn't the best thriller ever, I seem to race through this story following the main protagonist's every step and disturbing discovery with keen interest.
Avery (*who* comes up with these names?!) returns to her hometown, Cypress Springs, when her father takes his own life. While coming to terms with their relationship and his death, Avery finds comfort in a sense of 'coming home'. Its like she never left 12 years ago to pursue her dream of becoming a journalist. The town hasn't changed at all.
But behind the warm welcome and memories of more happier times, not to mention the gentle reawakening of a teenage romance with her former boyfriend, now a Police Officer for the area, Avery discvoers not all is as it seems.
There seem to be a higher number of deaths attributed to residents, all of which are officially explained. But one of the missing, presumed dead, has a sister, and she is determined to find out what has become of her sibling. She contacts Avery, as does a bereaved and alcoholic mother whose two troublesome teenage sons died in a shootout following a murder they alledgedly committed.
Avery digs deeper and finds that her initial impressions of her hometown mask unpleasant truths and dark forces at work.
'The Seven' - a group initially raised to help a community deal with change in the modern world now seem to have taken to vigilante action of the most violent and disturbing kind.
But what can they have to do with the deaths that have been occuring - not least Avery's father?
As I say, a disturbing read in many places. The reveal is sort of a letdown, as I had worked out the parties involved, but not the full extent. A bit MHC, but more violent than she reaches for I think.
Now AVL for someone else to enjoy. If thats an appropriate word!

Never got round to reading this one, and the amount of books in my flat is getting embarrassing so it’s off to raise money for Oxfam.
