Edmund de Waal is a world-famous ceramicist. Having spent thirty years making beautiful pots—which are then sold, collected, and handed on—he has a particular sense of the secret lives of objects. When he inherited a collection of 264 tiny Japanese wood and ivory carvings, called netsuke, he wanted to know who had touched and held them, and how the collection had managed to survive.
And so begins this extraordinarily moving memoir and detective story as de Waal discovers both the story of the netsuke and of his family, the Ephrussis, over five generations. A nineteenth-century banking dynasty in Paris and Vienna, the Ephrussis were as rich and respected as the Rothchilds. Yet by the end of the World War II, when the netsuke were hidden from the Nazis in Vienna, this collection of very small carvings was all that remained of their vast empire.

I didn't really get into this, not because it's bad, but I'm not supposed to read it right now, it seems. Another bookcrosser wished to read it after me, so I will give it to her at our meet-up on February 12th.

Having heard a couple of other bookcrossers discuss this book I'm now a little uncertain whether I will read it or not. But I'll probably give it a try...after all; it says "masterpiece" on the cover.

No, I won't read this through.
I read a few chapters, but I will leave it at that. I think the writer gets lost in details. There are pages upon pages with detailed descriptions of pieces of art. Too boring.
Also, I discovered, I'm not that interested in the "stinking rich" peoples parties and art collecting.

I was hesitant about this story at the beginning, art and architecture is not my strongest interest, but soon it captured me. A fantastic genealogical history that I enjoyed very much and learned a lot from.

I just want to read it before this year end. I'm prisoned under to-do-lists but I find the book very interesting of course.

A quite new topic for me and I had difficulty about it. When I took a break from this Book I met another story about small things. They were made in different stuff but I find it mysterious.
