I thought this book was a bit all over the place but maybe it is so just with the first book as there are so many things to explain that it takes space from the actual mystery. At the same time though I found it entertaining enough and hope to read more about the characters and their lives:)

"Soon" has taken me great many years, but I finally began reading this and will stuff it to somebody's Christmas stocking afterwards. Appears to be good.

The writer is not a dog person. Kelly lives in a motel when she first arrives, but dumps her Rottweiler into her late aunt's yard, outside a house where nobody lives. The dog seems to be there around the clock. Kelly goes to a three-mile-jog - without the dog! No wonder he begins to find his own entertainment. And then they think giving the dog old golf balls would prevent him of fetching balls from the golf course. How stupid are they? The attraction is not the rockhard ball, but the flying object. Besides playing with golf balls can be dangerous. Chewing them may easily break a tooth and dogs that size might also swallow them. I've seen a Dobermann whose x-ray showed 26 golfballs in his stomach. He also lived near a golf course, but the owner had no idea he was eating balls. He only had mild indigestion.
I would not call golfers who complain about a dog stealing balls from the track "loud-mouthed" for no reason. They pay astronomical fees for playing and it does change the whole course of the game if balls are being snatched away. For once I'm on the golfers' side - not against dogs, but against their unbelievably stupid owners.
The book was published in 2005, when working on a computer from home was not that usual. Some companies allowed it, but the big change of attitude came the hard way - with covid-19. To stop the disease from spreading people had to work from home and kids had to attend lectures from home computers as schools were closed.
I guess many companies will change their routines for good and it also saves them money not having to have big offices in prime locations. That requires that people who work from home actually DO the work they are meant to do. If I worked in an office, I think I would work better going to the office. Too many temptations at home. Some people call them books...

Finished. An ok mystery, apart from the dogmanship or lack of it. If I were a nutty knitter I would probably like it even more. My Mom liked to buy yarn. Her knitting had never a wow-factor, but when she died, yarn began to turn up from every possible book and cranny. I gave my knitter friends three big black plastic sacs full of yarn. I saved some, in case I would want to knit something (not very likely, my biggest work was a tea cosy some twenty years ago), but I’ve donated them to a Ukrainian refugee ”supermarket”, where they can pick for free what they need from donated goods. For some reason they don’t take books there, which I find odd. A book takes you elsewhere for a while and makes time go faster, both good reasons for reading when you are in a foreing country and do not know if you have a home to return to.

Merry Christmas! Have you turned into a nutty knitter, like all grannies do?
And it is a first of a new series, too, something you can't resist...

Oh yeah, first in series!! Thank you so much! I am not really a knitter, but for the past couple of years I've learned to knit socks again - only basic ones, without any fancy patterns :)
