Years back when I first read Anne Rice's vampire novels, I found out that she also wrote this book. I went to a used bookstore asking for it, and the middle aged lady stared at me (over her reading glasses - or maybe I just imagined that detail...) and said disapprovingly, that's an erotica, do you know that?

So it was many years later, now I am married and less naive, that I came across a copy of this book at the library book sale.

The story is inspired by the tale of Sleeping Beauty. The awakening of the princess involved much more than a gentle kiss (which in fact, I read somewhere was actually the original version of the story before it became more family friendly.) The prince took the princess away as a love slave.

Maybe I am now too old and prude to enjoy it, but I had to agree with Prince Felix that "each new thing is only a variation and at the heart it is all the same ultimately". Once the novelty and excitement worn off the book became a bit repetitive, and I've always found Anne Rice excessively wordy.

Reserving this for the Bizzare Bookbox, after getting the green light from the organizer.
