Truly a beautiful book! I loved it! There really isn't much more I can say than that....

One of the earliest Jewish religious volumes to be illuminated with images, the Sarajevo Haggadah survived centuries of purges and wars thanks to people of all faiths who risked their lives to safeguard it. Geraldine Brooks, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of March, has turned the intriguing but sparely detailed history of this precious volume into an emotionally rich, thrilling fictionalization that retraces its turbulent journey. In the hands of Hanna Heath, an impassioned rare-book expert restoring the manuscript in 1996 Sarajevo, it yields clues to its guardians and whereabouts: an insect wing, a wine stain, salt crystals, and a white hair. While readers experience crucial moments in the book's history through a series of fascinating, fleshed-out short stories, Hanna pursues its secrets scientifically, and finds that some interests will still risk everything in the name of protecting this treasure. A complex love story, thrilling mystery, vivid history lesson, and celebration of the enduring power of ideas, People of the Book will surely be hailed as one of the best novels of 2008. --Mari Malcolm

An interesting story of a Jewish prayerbook as it travels from person to person through the centuries. The writing style reminded me of the works by Elizabeth Kostova,(The Historian and The Swan Thieves);lots of detailed characters and supporting historical facts in the storyline.

Bringing this book to the BC Meeting today at the Joshua Tree Cafe.
I picked this up at July's BookCrossing meeting. Apparently this is a book that megami-no-ushi would love so I will pass it along to her when I see her next. If it is worth reading I am sure she will pass it back to me.
Update: Passed to megami-no-ushi July 21, 2010.

Mr. Sing-song: This was a good mystery and I really enjoyed the history lesson.
What a spectacular book!! I loved following this story of the Sarajevo Haggadah through the hands of the people who saved it and preserved it through the years. Geraldine Brooks is even better in this one than she was in Year of Wonders, which i loved too!
Taking to the June meeting.

Dispite my best efforts (ok maybe not my best...) I came home with 13 books. I guess I know what I am doing this month!
What an amazing book, I am so glad that it came back to me! It was facinating to think about how the book travelled and what clues where there to help guide us on a journey. Makes me think about where the books I have read go and the amazing journey's they have along the way... good thing there is BookCrossing so that somewhere along the line I might actually hear about it!
Taking this to our July meet up where it will be passed to the next person on the list.

Picked this up at the July meeting today. My daughter just looked over her shoulder as I was entering this and she whispered that I have to read this right away as I will love it. Guess I should finish the two I am currently reading first.
Oops - I didn't read it right away and my daughter was right - I did love it! Love the history combined with the mystery.
I am taking a large stash of books - most of which I have read to our June meeting at Cravings to be either passed on or left on a bookshelf.
My name was next on the list to read so brought it home with me from the June book croosing meeting. I hope it doesn't sit in my TBR pile too long.
Well it only sat on my tbr pile for a year. I did enjoy the book but not as much as I hoped. It was an interesting style but not really sure I liked it as it kind of worked backwards. I did find it interesting how the author imagined the clues found in the book came to be but I was a bit confused by the romance of the main character and the chief librarian in Sarajevo. I didn't think it really added anything to the story.
Taking this to the July BookCrossing meeting to be enjoyed by another reader
Picked up at today's bookcrossing meetup.
Purging my TBR pile - on to the next reader.
I have vague memories of probably putting my name down for this book during my mystery thriller phase. I think it sounded interesting at the time, but I'll need to be in the right mindset to get to this.

What an original book... It's an interesting take that prompts me to think about some of the books I have and the condition they're in.
Also, what an interesting career Hanna has... It's the kind of career any book lover would dream of... And then I have to remember the patience and sitting still required, and I rethink that.
Fascinating read. A bit dark and heavy, especially with the historical parts, but still a great read.
Will be handed off to BookyMcBooks if he still wants to read it.

Grabbed this from Crataegus. Forgot to register it until today. Looks like a good read.
This was a really well written book. The individual stories about the history of the book were excellent, as was the main narrative.
As a whole, I wasn't really hooked until about 3/4 of the way through. For me, it was the cumulative effect of each story that made this such a good read.
Thanks Minerva101!
