1970s Perigee small hardcover of the 1954 first novel, with notes by E. L. Epstein. It was chosen by E. M. Forster as the Outstanding Novel of the Year. The cover art on this copy is very different from the picture icon now attached to this same ISBN. This copy came originally from El Toro High School in Mission Viejo down in SoCal. This was on my list of the 100 best novels to read, when I found it a few months ago in the free books pile on the porch of Dimond Library.

Edit April 5, 2014: I kind of go back and forth on this one. It is of course a great story. But grimly disturbing, and not a pleasant read. That's not a huge problem. But there are mystical elements, that are just kind of weird. The Beastie, the Lord of the Flies. It's a short book, so those things just sort of appear, rather than develop. I can sort of believe the descent into tribal depravity, because I see it firsthand here in the 'hood, among the feral youth. But these are youths with incredibly dysfunctioal background for their entire lives, and no moral compass whatsoever. So the total descent of the youths on the island in a rather short time just seems to be quite a stretch. Listening to the author's audio reading of this book, he explained that he was attempting to parallel the natural tribalization of adult societies, as replicated by boys when left to their own devices. All right, but it just seems a bit forced. I currently have this one ranked at #243 on my ranked list of best-read books lately.
