I hereby bet Tony Hawks the sum of One Hundred Pounds that he cannot hitchhike round the circumference of Ireland, with a fridge, within one calendar month'. A foolhardy attempt to win a drunken bet led to Tony Hawks having one of the most unforgettable experiences of his life. Joined by his trusty travelling-companion-cum-domestic-appliance, he found himself in the midst of a remarkable, inspirational and, at times, downright silly adventure. In their month of madness, Tony and his fridge surfed together; entered a batchelor festival; and one of them had sex without the other knowing. The fridge got christened, and they even met the poorest king on Earth. An absurd story of an extraordinary adventure, Round Ireland with a Fridge follows the fearless pair as they battle towards Dublin and a breathtaking finale that is moving, uplifting, and a fitting conclusion to the whole ridiculous affair.

A great, amusing read, this book is truly hilarious - a wonderful, dry sense of humour, expressed very eloquently. It made me break into giggles pretty often (a great book to read on the bus or so). I also like the way Hawks depicts Ireland. But he shouldn’t be surprised that no woman would ever call him back though…

The Book and magnets arrived!
I felt like a child at Christmas when my OH brought the package inside! I loved the magnets, bookmark and labels :) Sending a big thank you to ApoloniaX.
5th June 2010 - I have just finished reading this book. What a funny story... It had me giggling on the tube to work much to the dismay of the passengers travelling near me. There were definitely some funny looks being shot in my direction. It was a very enjoyable read.
Waiting on RonOren for an address to pass it on

Arrived yesterday and I've started on it immediately. So far, I'm fully agreeing with Sardonyx that there are snickering moments in there (and undoubtedly laugh-out-loud ones as well). So I'm really looking forward to the rest of it!
Thanks also for the absolutely brilliant fridge magnet, Sardonyx! It will have pride of place at all of our houseparties, barbeque, or whenever we open a beer in the house. So pretty much, we'll use it every other day... :-)

Yep, this was pretty much was I expected from it. Many chuckling moments and the odd laugh-out-loud one, but the overwhelming effect it had was to increase even further my (rather irrational) love for the Irish. I can't imagine any other country taking such an eejit into their hearts and making such a fuss over what is, in the end, a silly bet. Aren't they a lovely people!
I've been trying to pick a favourite bit, but I can't. All I can say is that I loved the epilogue...
Thanks ever so much for sharing this, ApoloniaX! I'll get in touch with sing-on-a-star and get both book and fridge magnets moving soon.

Very easy to read, and lots of funny moments. I loved how his story spread far and wide in Ireland, and the many quirky folk he met.
Have Kayellbee's address so it will be off to her in the next couple of days.

This book was hilarious. After wanting to visit Ireland for years, thanks to Maeve Binchy, this book makes me want to visit Ireland even more. Perhaps when the kids are older we'll finally take a trip there. Tony Hawks is a funny writer (like RonOren, I loved the epilogue), and I'd like to read more by him.

Completely crazy but very nice. Some kind of very original travel diary. I loved the episode with the nuns and was amazed by this man's drinking capabilities.

Woho, I won a RABCK! :) Thank you so much ApoloniaX, this book looks very interesting and I look forward to reading it and to learning more about Ireland (a coutry I'd very much like to visit). And thank you too for the Janis fridge magnet, I love it :)
This year I resolved to get round to reading more of the books I have waiting at home and one of the first ones I thought of was this one that I've wanted to read ever since I got it. It's a little over six years now since I recieved it and now I've finally read it! Like everyone else I really enjoyed reading this book, it was a funny and easy read which was exactly what I needed right now with a lot going on around me. Knowing that I had recieved it through Bookcrossing and that this exact same copy of the book had been read and enjoyed by so many others before me only added to the experience. It was also something I was reminded of when reading since I often had to have a roll of tape ready for some of the pages that are starting to come off. But I hope this book is up for some more travelling, I'll try to find a new home for it as soon as possible.
Finally this book gets to travel again! Happy reading everyone, and take care of this book that is becoming slightly fragile... :)

This arrived in Switzerland with sweets and greetings on Christmas eve... It's a busy time here, so it may be the new year before I can get to this apparently well-travelled book. Thanks so much for sending and for the good wishes - all the best to everyone for a happy season and wonderful new year.

If you accept the premise, that it makes sense to hitchhike around Ireland because of a bet, then this is a fairly entertaining story / travelogue. I did enjoy it but did not find it hysterically funny.
In ways I found the out-datedness most interesting, to read and remember how things were at a time when the radio was pretty universally listened to by all. Yes, there was television and yes, they even had mobile phones occasionally, but in this day and age of podcasts and the internet, the fact that so many people listened to a live radio show is a thing of the past.
I think, and the author acknowledges, that the adventure would have been wholly different without the involvement of the Gerry Ryan show. Much beer was consumed.
This is here as a bookcrossing ring - I still have not made it to Ireland, and this does confirm my wish to make it there at some point.
Thanks so much for making this available and sending it on - and all the very best to all for a brilliant 2020 with wonderful stories, both on and off the page!

Yesterday this book sort of hitchhiked from Switzerland to France - at any rate, it travelled by car, and now it's been posted from there to Portugal. Thanks for making this available. Enjoy!

Thank you very much for sharing this book and for sending it to me :-)
I guess I had too high expectations about this book, especially being it about a journey around Ireland...
But it was ok, and there were some parts that made me laugh; it's a light reading.
(I spent 3 weeks in Ireland in 1995, I didn't hitchhiked - I travelled mostly by bus - but I think my journey was much more interesting than his as I went to many interesting places rather than just local pubs...)
This book is already on its way to Canada. It may take a while to get there because I sent it by economic intl shipping.
I wish Gypsysmom will appreciate reading it.

The book actually didn't take too long to reach Canada. It arrived in our mailbox on February 10 so that is only about 2 1/2 weeks to make it across the Atlantic Ocean and then half-way across Canada. I'll try to get this read and off to mcsar soon. Will keep you posted.
What a tonic this book was for this time of social distancing and stressful outings! I was in Ireland less than a year ago and I really enjoyed reading of Tony Hawks adventures while he hitch-hiked around the Republic of Ireland. He did it in 1997 but I think a person could probably have done it last year and found the Irish people as friendly and helpful as he did then. Life slows down in Ireland; tractors still take to the highway to travel miles with no-one getting upset behind them; sheep stand in the middle of the road and just look at the cars they have stopped for as long as they like; people stop for a long chat while out for a walk. And everyone wants to help you whether you need directions or a recommendation for a place to visit or how to figure out where to park without getting a ticket.
Tony didn't include Northern Ireland in his trip because it was still a dangerous time to go there. He did however end up in Northern Ireland briefly to do a TV interview and the chapter on that is hilarious. We were able to visit Northern Ireland last year and we found no difference between people regardless of which side of the border we were on.
I have kept this book longer than I should have but I plead the unusual circumstances of a global pandemic in my defence. I have now contacted the next person on the list, mcsar, and hope to get it off in the mail very soon. Thank you to Tsjara and Apalonia and VictoriaWagTail and all the rest who have passed this book along. It is getting a little tattered now and must be handled carefully but hopefully it has a few more stops to make.

This book is off to the next participant in the ray, mcsar in Richmond, BC. Canada Post will pick it up from my doorstep for free so I don't have to leave my social isolation to mail it. Isn't technology wonderful?
When you find a BookCrossing book it is yours to do with what you like. You can read it and keep it or pass it on or if you don't think it is your kind of book pass it on to someone who might like it or release it in a spot for someone else to find like you just did. Whatever you choose it would be great if you could write a short note letting us know what new adventures the book is on.

Finally on its way to the next reader. Hope you enjoy this fun little adventure. It was a great diversion during the lockdown.
Thanks, mcsar. This arrived yesterday - only 4 days! That’s lightning quick delivery across the border from Canada to the US.
I’ll finish the book I’m currently reading then I’ll start Round Ireland next. I always enjoy travel books and this one looks fun.

I signed up for this ray because I like stories set in other countries and I’ve enjoyed travel shows about Ireland. I had no idea what the book was actually about and assumed it was about someone eating their way round the country, not literally about a fridge. It’s a cute story and Tony had a unique adventure. In case anyone is interested I recently saw an excellent documentary, The Irish Pub, about some very interesting traditional public houses and their owners.
The book arrived today. I can't believe how fast it got here. The mail has been moving so slow since the pandemic. Iwill start this as soon as I finish my current read. I traveled to Ireland almost a year ago so I'm looking forward to reading this book.
I enjoyed this funny book about Tony's hitch hiking adventure around Ireland. I was in Ireland last September so this brought back some good memories of my time there.

The book arrived today. Can't wait to start it!!! Thanks!
I found this book absolutely hilarious! When he took it to the Abbey to be blessed, I laughed so hard. I called my 90 year old mother who had a grade school teacher named Sister Clare. She said, "Well, Sister Clare would bless about anything." Then we laughed some more. Thank you so much for sharing this book!!!

I was LAST......sooooo.....I'm continuing this bookray on to claudia_amorim, though I think it'll be a bit of a surprise when she gets it. Only seems fair that this little book makes its way to Ireland where it all took place.

It's in Ireland! I was definitely surprised, it actually arrived a little while ago with all the postcards but I put it straight on the nightstand to begin reading and only realised now that I never journalled it! Sorry about that it's been a crazy few months.
Loved this book so much! I needed a light form of escapism and this was just brilliant. I was really in need of bringing more “fridge philosophy” into my life. Living just outside Dublin and having visited many of the places he visited has also really helped make this a wonderful read... now excuse me while I load the family and a toaster in the car and begin a new adventure...
Carrying on its epic journey. Onto Finland :)
