Recieved this in the post this morning as a RABCK to grant a wish off my list from the lovely Jilbe! Thank you so much (for both book and stickers!). I can't wait to read this. I plan to read then release it, to carry on it's adventures...
Took me a while to settle into this book. I think that was partially because I was confused about its setting. I thought it was all happening in Africa. The references to Australia confused me, as did the mention of Bougainville (which I thought was a made up place -it's not, it's an island of Papua New Guinea). Even when I did know, it was still Africa to me.
What we do have here is a pretty timeless fable, which I imagine is its appeal. You could imagine it taking place anywhere that takes your own fancy. It's almost a modern day Alice in Wonderland, because of the surreal events & random occurances that just keep on coming. Randomly it gave me a better understanding of Great Expectations (the bulk of which I didn't get or enjoy so much).

Going to my first ever BookCrossing meet up. Should have been a picnic in Regents Park, but Mother Nature had better ideas. Now we are going for a pub lunch in the Allsop Arms near Marylebone/Baker Street. I have a large bag of books to share, so though it easiest to make release notes now (I really don’t want to bring any back). So go forth brave little books! Thanks for letting me read you. I hope you find many new readers to delight.
Picked up at today‘s meetup.
"Matilda is a young girl in Bougainville, a tropical island where the horror of civil war lurks. Mr. Watts, the only white Person, is the self appointed teacher of the tiny school where the only textbook is Dickens' Great Expectations."
An interesting book which took me a while to get into but then I enjoyed it a lot, even though terrible things happen on the island. But I liked the way the story is told from Matilda's point of view. It lead me to look up the civil war on Bougainville, an island I had never heard of before. I also found out that they made the book into a movie in 2012 with Hugh Laurie playing Mr. Watts.
Thank you for bringing it to the meet up :-)
