1951 Little, Brown hardcover Book-of-the-Month Club edtion, with dust jacket designed by George Salter. The title character is a Major General in the U.S. Army. I found this copy a year ago in the free books pile on the porch of Dimond Library.

Edit March 29, 2020: This was just a skim for me. It was probably a topical read in its time, but perhaps not of much relevant interest today. The funny thing is that I still have a vivid memory of looking at it repeatedly, well over a decade ago, when it sat on the library sale shelf for months, until they finally discarded it into the free box, where I picked it up. I currently have this ranked at #4758 on my ranked list of best-read books lately.
