Need to clear out the Torey Hayden books to make some space. I will read them again before I set them free.

Journal Entry 2 by redfox5 at Sandhurst, Berkshire United Kingdom on Monday, October 17, 2011
This was the first book I ever read about child abuse. It's still as sad and shocking on my second read of it. Some of the things that happen to Sheila bring me to tears. I can't even begin to imagen what it must be like for a six year old to have gone through all that. Torey is a fantastic teacher. She has helped so many kids. It's also sad to see where the education system puts their budget above these children. They need these sorts of classes. It's not fair on them or the other children if they keep mainstreaming them. Some of them need the indivdual care that you just wouldn't get in your run-of-the-mill classroom. There is a second book about Sheila which I shall read shortly.

Journal Entry 5 by Oedde at Cluj-Napoca, Transylvania and Partium Romania on Monday, February 6, 2012
I picked it up and started to read it several times but it just wasn't the right book for me. Maybe it will be later but I'm putting it on available anyway because others might be more interested in it than me.

Journal Entry 6 by Oedde at Cluj-Napoca, Transylvania and Partium Romania on Monday, February 13, 2012
I decided to make this a bookray, hoping to make up for not reading it...

Participants:
flossie771 (USA)
blackteiwaz (Costa Rica)
marmee463 (Australia to Australia)

(edit 20 Feb 2012:) It looks like it's going to be a short bookray. If there are more signups within the next couple of weeks, I will update the list accordingly. The usual bookray rules apply, so you have approx. four weeks to read the book before sending it to the next one in line, and you have to write journal entries. Once the last person in the ray has received it, this person is free to do as she pleases - wild-release, restart the ray, keep, read again,... Hope you all enjoy this bookray! I will certainly enjoy reading your entries!

Finally went to the post office yesterday, this book was waiting for me! :)

Journal Entry 12 by blackteiwaz at San Pedro, San José Costa Rica on Saturday, May 5, 2012
I did enjoy this book, it is my second Tory Hayden read, and I think she presents very interesting cases of abused children, who had the chance to get the help they need. I like reading the different techniques that are used, and how children respond to them.
Thanks for sharing it with me!

I arrived home today to find 'One Child' had arrived all the way from Costa Rica, what a thrill, thank-you so much blackteiwaz. I love all the postage stamps.
This book is going straight to the top of my TBR pile.

Journal Entry 15 by wingmarmee463wing at Templestowe, Victoria Australia on Wednesday, June 6, 2012
I have read quite a few of Torey's memoirs and in every one she has displayed her innate writing skill for bringing a character to life as well as realistically depicting a time and place.
Hallelujah......she has done it again with 'One Child', hence I found myself transported to the classroom, for yet another emotional roller coaster ride.
Without doubt in all of Torey's books, the reader will be drawn into Torey's struggles particularly when events become seemingly overwhelmingly difficult.
At the beginning of Chapter 4, Torey explains her approach when dealing with these special children necessitates locking 'my own emotions...because...when I didn't I became too discouraged, too shocked, too disillusioned to function effectively'. I'm not surprised, as even just reading the story is enough for me to feel the emotions of discouragement, shock and disillusionment.
In this particular memoir, centred around six year old Sheila, Torey takes us along on a unique journey which makes for a compelling, emotionally charged read. Loved it!!!!
My thanks to redfox5 for releasing it, Oedde for arranging the ray and last but not least blackteiwaz for sending it to me all the way from Costa Rica.
