Arrived here safely today. Thank you, footymadgill

Mostly I liked this, but I was in some ways baffled, too. The plot concerns a nine-year-old boy in a tiny, impoverished village who discovers a situation almost impossible for him to comprehend, let alone respond to effectively. So you're screaming "Do this! Do this!" at the same time you're admiring the skill of the author for writing so convincingly from the nine-year-old viewpoint.
I agree with smurphie that the ending is jarringly unexpected, and the problem may be with the abridgement. Nowhere on the case or booklet does the phrase "Abridgement approved by author" appear. There are some jerky transitions in the piece, and from reviews, the ending of the full book may have a different impact than in this version.
The reader, Dennis Olsen, is very good. In fact, when I heard his wonderful English accent, I melted with satisfaction. And then I thought "Wait a minute, this is from Australian Broadcasting!" And in fact, Olsen is an Aussie, a professional performer & producer. I admit I'm not an authority on accents, but this sounds quite different from any other Australians I've ever met. So I can't help wondering why the British accent to read a book set in Italy?
This particular copy has a slightly damaged outer case, and the raised tabs that hold a disc in the case are partly missing for disk one, so this needs some care in handling. However, all four disks play perfectly.
