One from a box of books donated today to the Phoenix Association (animal rescue) Giant Book Sale, to be held on April 24th. I'm buying this one for my TBR pile.

Three short stories revolving around painters or their work. I loved this little book (only 134 pages) and its rich language, made even more enjoyable by the contrast to the bland "The Jane Austen Book Club" which I was reading at the same time.

I'm reserving this to send to Nu-Knees with another book I think she'll enjoy.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I know Nu-Knees will enjoy this little book. Too bad it is only 134 pages, but at least it's easy to carry around

Thank you for this collection of short stories, bluenoser - and for the other two books which came in the same post, thank you very much. Your parcels brought a cheerful smile to a face that a sore throat and cough had brought a frown to!
I count A S Byatt's Possession as one of my top reads of all time but have so far been put off reading some of her other novels by their length. This neat little volume, only 131 pages of clear print, doesn't have that disadvantage, especially as the three individual stories will be easy enough to pick up and put down!

Looks like I've duplicated this Journal Entry for some reason. I don't know why, except that BookCrossing does have some strange bugs doing some strange things to it at the moment. I won't delete this just yet in case the other one disappears of its own accord and I'll be left with neither. I wouldn't want to have to rewrite it ....

These short stories are a work of art. The author cleverly uses language to paint vivid word pictures in brilliantly contrasting colours with varying shades of light and dark.
I'm ambivalent about what they say but the manner of their telling is superb.
Thank you again, bluenoser.
Now on offer to a BookCrosser who's recently discovered the appeal of A S Byatt through The Children's Book.

Received today.
Thanks very much! I'm sure I'm going to enjoy this.

Oh this was delicious! All three stories were wonderful but it was some of the more mundane parts that I found the most enchanting. A series of trips to the hairdresser was described so beautifully in Medusa's ankles.
I loved the couple of paragraphs that started in the second story, Art work, with "There is an inhabited silence in 49 Alma Road," and goes on to describe the sounds made by the washing machine and tumble dryer.
And how happy I was when just as I closed the book, a thud on the doormat announced the arrival of Possession. More Byatt. Bliss.
