Book purchased today from the (temporary) book-sale stand outside Coles at Croydon Centro shopping centre, 5-15 Kent Avenue, to read and release.

From back cover:
"'It seemed like a good idea at the time.' With these words, young Australian veterinarian Jack Ayerbe moves to a rural practice in the north-west corner of Ireland. It was 1970, an outbreak of respiratory disease was threatening the local cattle population and, sensing adventure, Jack takes up the challenge. It would change his life forever.

Ballina, County Mayo: its landscape, its people and the farm animals that provide their livlihood soon consumed every minute of Jack's life. Meanwhile Jack took comfort in doing a little consuming of his own - the odd whiskey, drop of poteen and pint of stout providing well earned sustenance along the way.

Ballina was far removed from the sunny and outward looking Australia of Jack's upbringing. The Ireland of old, with its ancient traditions and idiosyncratic ways, was still very much alive and untouched by the looming promise of the EU.

It was a time when ploughing by hand, donkey and cart transport, and the ever burning peat fires were still very much a way of life. It was also a time of the 'Troubles' across the boarder, when IRA men came and went, and the influence of the Catholic Church was all pervasive. But most of all it was a time of friendship, conviviality and the joy of living.

Indeed, for young Jack Ayerbe, his life in Ballina turned out to be a very good idea indeed."

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Another book against part two (Ireland) of my 'Lifetime Release Challenge' for re-release.

Posted sea mail today, Friday, April 16 2010, with a calendar and Wings for a month.

Flicked through this without reading it all, enjoying the photos and what I did read, so many 'happy returns' to all future readers.

As I have many happy memories of my visits to Ireland, I've put my name down to return for the Dublin BookCrossing Convention in 2012.
