From the back cover:

Elaine Risley, a painter, returns to Toronto to find herself overwhelmed by her past. Memories of childhood - unbearable betrayals and cruelties - surface relentlessly, forcing her to confront the spectre of Cordelia, once her best friend and tormentor, who has haunted her for forty years...

A fantastic book - vicious and uncomfortable in some places, beautiful in others. My sister and her partner both studied this in separate English A-Level classes, and were amazed that I had a copy to lend them...the notion of reading it of my own volition was apparently unconvincing. Margaret Atwood is one of my favourite authors writing today, and this is one of my favourite of her books. Going into TFF Round 2 -The Virtual Experiment...I hope whoever claims it enjoys it every bit as much as I always do.

Headed out to Kittiwake on 3rd Feb 2004.

This will be the third Margaret Atwood I've read, after The Handmaid's Tale and The Blind Assassin.

"The white socks, the Mary Janes, the always-inadequate birthday present swathed in tissue paper, and the little girls with their assessing eyes, their slippery deceitful smiles, tartaned up like Lady MacBeth".

As middle-aged painter Elaine returns to Toronto for a retrospective, she is obsessed by the possibility of meeting Cordelia again, the 'best friend' who led their other friends in bullying her in grade school under the guise of 'improving' her. The power games continue until Elaine finds the strength to shun her so-called friends, but when she and Cordelia end up at the same high school a few years later, they become friends again. This time it is Elaine who has the upper hand as she is good at school work and is the one all the boys like, and I began to realise just how damaged Cordelia really is, and to be sorry for her too. This is my favourite of Margaret Atwood's books that I've read so far.

I didn't like this as much as the other Margaret Atwood novels I've read but still a good read.
The book was hinting at secrets in Cordelia's family which made her the way she was. It was a shame we didn't hear what happened to her. I liked the brother, Stephen, who was so caught up in chasing butterflies he didn't realise he was trespassing on army land.
I was hoping to pass this on to someone who has it on their wish list but the BCer I offered it to didn't want it.
I'll probably advertise it as available.

Taken from Sterile's bookbox!

I've just finished 'The Handmaids Tale' and so have popped it in the box as a replacement!

I didn't enjoy this as much as The Handmaids Tale but it was still a good read, one that shows how cruel little girls can be. I particularly liked the relationship between Elaine and Stephen, having an older brother myself, and the description of marbles and cat's eyes brought back some memories!
