I found this book at the Gaithersburg Book Festival and decided to read it because I always enjoyed this movie star's performances. Granger’s autobiography spans this actor’s journey from a boy growing up in a household of his father (a retired British Army major), mother, and a doctor (his mother’s live-in lover) through performing on the UK's stage to acting and starring during the era of Hollywood’s studio system. It ends in midcareer with his painful divorce from Jean Simmons. Along Granger's journey, I did not need to know all the details of his many sexual encounters; e.g. his assertion he was "raped" during one encounter with a woman while he had the maturity to run headlong out of another woman’s bedroom during an unwanted sexual advance. Nonetheless, he did give interesting insights into the pressures (artistic, commercial, social, family, etc.) on stars during decades of the studio system. Equally important, he memorably describes performing his own stunts in epic swashbucklers, along with resulting injuries, sicknesses, and near catastrophes, as well as generally kind perspectives of many of Hollywood’s personalities and legends. He even has some kind thoughts about Howard Hughes, who spent years, a great deal of money, and even a lawsuit, attempting to seduce Jean Simmons, Granger’s wife. I enjoyed this book, but only wish Granger gave more time to his impression of the many challenges to an actor’s survival and those who impacted his acting career than some of the peccadilloes of rapacious stars and the super wealthy.
I will be leaving this book at a local, "leave one, take one" book exchange.
