Fourteen year old Alma Singer is trying to find a cure for her mother's loneliness. Believing she might discover it in an old book her mother is lovingly translating, she sets out in search of it's author.

This was a christmas gift and not a book that would have caught my eye. I loved it! Leo Gursky was such a good character, and the relationships within the story were touching in some respects and sad in others. Well worth reading and kept me thinking through possibilities of the plot right to the end. I'm setting this book as available to anyone who would like to borrow and return.

On it's way to valpete!
Thanks, I've received it and look forward to reading it. It'll be a while, since I have a few before it. I'll be as quick as possible.
I had great hope for this book. It had received rave reviews everywhere I looked. However, for me, it was just too confushing keeping the characters and plot straight. Ms. Krauss is an excellent writer. Some of the prose was beautiful, although it didn't compensate for the confusing plot.
I was at the end of a Book Ring and tried to contact the initiator of the Ring to return the book to her. However, I haven't received a response, so am sending this along to another BCer with this book on her Wishlist. Enjoy!
Thanks for sending this to me, Valpete! I'm looking forward to it.
Updated 8/1/12. Was able to pm Sing-on-a-star today, who told me she doesn't need this copy back, so I'm free to pass it on.

Sadly, MaryZee passed suddenly in September 2012. MaryZee's daughter is now ready to rehome her mom's books and I was willing to collect and redistribute them to keep her literary legacy alive.
MaryZee had a lot of books on her BC shelves when she passed. I am planning on sharing most of them with other locals. But I am hanging on to a few that might be more appropriate for other distribution methods. From the looks of it, this might be a good fit if I revive the Bookish Book Box.
