Round the market square the life of Caxley revolved, from horse-drawn drays to the noisy new motors and the aeroplanes which the young men of Caxley longed to fly, from the coronation of King Edward VII to the last flowering of the Empire, ending on the muddly battlefields of the Somme..For Sep it was the end of an era; for Bertie and Kathy, the beginning of happiness; and for young Edward, tasting his first glass of wine, there was a world of tomorrows.

Spanning over thirty years, this delightful story of two men and their families in the village of Caxley, England, takes the listener from the coronation of King Edward VII through the advent of the automobile. British actress June Barrie provides a smooth narration and distinctive personalities for the lifelong rivals. Ironmonger Bender North is portrayed as a confident and successful tradesman. Although he is somewhat gruff with villagers, Barrie reveals his softer side when he is enjoying leisure time in his garden. In contrast, Barrie portrays baker Sep Howard as a meeker and more controlled man. As the two men have their differences over the years, Barrie performs their arguments with appropriate fury and their moments of forgiveness with tenderness.
I did not really get drawn into this story, so I did not actually read the whole book. I decided to release this book as soon as I can get to a Little Free Library, (called a "minibieb" here in Netherlands). I will put this book into it.

Hallo daar, gelukkige vinder!
Wat leuk dat je op deze pagina bent komen kijken. Als je dit leest, heb je een boek gevonden, zomaar een onverwacht kadootje van mij voor jou... Veel plezier ermee! Hierbij trouwens wat spelregels mbt bookcrossing:
1. Het zou fijn zijn als je meldt dat het veilig bij jou is. Dat mag gewoon in het Nederlands.
2. Daarna kun je het boek gaan lezen en als je wilt nog eens schrijven wat je ervan vond.
3. Mag het boek verder reizen, geef het dan door aan iemand anders, of laat het zomaar ergens weer achter, liefst op een veilige, droge plek. Je kunt via de bookcross-site ook weer melden waar je het hebt neergelegd, zodat anderen ernaar op zoek kunnen gaan...
TIP: Als je het boek op zijn reis wilt volgen, dan kun je je het beste aanmelden als nieuwe bookcrosser (www.bookcrossing.com). Het is erg leuk om erachter te komen hoe het met 'jouw' boek op z'n reis verder gaat!!
