An evocative story of a rundown hotel in Ireland of the period just after World War 1, with the activities of the IRA and the Black & Tans as a backdrop. Farrell's theme is the decline of the Protestant Ascendancy, and the humour is quite dark.

Given to me by ancient-welly on one of his visits to Colchester. I enjoyed 'The Siege of Krishnapur' by the same author so look forward to reading this once I have read several others on my 'to be read' shelf.

J. G. Farrell certainly had a very dark sense of humour and a style of his own. For me though this novel did not work as well as 'Siege of Krishnapur' and has some lengthy sections that in my view add little to the story. As a fictional work covering a similar period in Ireland I found 'A Star Called Henry' by Roddy Doyle more gripping and historically informative.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

A very good read. I felt that J Farrell knew his people and the friction between the English and the Irish during the 1920's
