Two immortal shapechanging aliens have existed on Earth as long as humanity itself. Now an artifact has been discovered in the deep ocean that ties into these aliens, and both will want to get their hands on it.
I liked in the book how the telling switched between different ages, following both the efforts to study the artifact in the near future and the changeling's adaptation to human society in the past, but I might have preferred not knowing who the changeling was at the artifact site. (Figuring out who the chameleon was wasn't that hard, I thought.)
Initially, the changeling is an interesting character, but as time passes, it begins to become more and more human, stripping it from being the Other, and stripping the contrast between it and humanity. This is perhaps intentional, but it seems to happen so very totally. The opposition of the chameleon is also very typical and seen many times before, the “good” alien versus the “bad” alien where there is no doubt as to who to support.
The book is very well written, a real page turner, and I read it with interest. I just failed to find any deeper meaning to it, something that I've come to expect from better science fiction, which I thought this would be, considering the awards that it has won. But it just left me cold, just another sci-fi adventure story.
