Barnaby Gaitlin is a 29 year old handyman and the black sheep of a rich Baltimore family. All the male members of his family (except him, of course) claim they've been visited by an angel who revealed their destiny to them. Barnaby is still waiting for his and when he sees an attractive woman on a train, he thinks maybe his angel has shown herself at long last.
I picked this up in a charity shop, as Anne Tyler was recommended in "The Good Reading Guide" to fans of Carol Shields. It was definitely a good suggestion, but I didn't enjoy it as much as my favourite Shields novels (it's going to take a lot to beat "Unless"...)

Picked up at the Winchester meet-up this evening for re-releasing elsewhere.

Caught at tonight's BookCrossing Meet at The Crown.
I really enjoyed this. Barnaby is a likeable character and while his past behaviour was obviously disturbed, it's not hard to understand why when you meet his family. Sophia is an unlikely angel; Barnaby's customers and fellow workers at Rent-a-back are great and they all come together in an engaging novel.
Given to geoffswimmer for holiday reading in Turkey, with permission to leave it there.
