"One Man's Bible is a fictionalized account of Gao Xingjian's life under the Chinese Communist regime. Daily life is riddled with paranoia and fear, and government propaganda turns citizens against one another. It is a place where a single sentence spoken ten years earlier can make one an enemy of the state.
But One Man's Bible is also a profound meditation on the essence of writing, on exile, on the effects of political oppression on the human spirit, and on how the human spirit can triumph."

A novel by the first Chinese recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. I bought the book a long while ago but never managed to read more than the first few chapters, even though I gave it a few tries. I'm really not sure where the problem lies here - it just didn't get me involved enough, I guess. Some books just suck you right in, but some don't, and these days I usually have more unread books on my shelf than time to read them, so often I just move on to the next book instead of forcing myself all the way through the current one when it fails to fascinate me.
