"One Man's Bible is a fictionalized account of Gao Xingjian's life under the Chinese Communist regime. Daily life is riddled with paranoia and fear, and government propaganda turns citizens against one another. It is a place where a single sentence spoken ten years earlier can make one an enemy of the state.
But One Man's Bible is also a profound meditation on the essence of writing, on exile, on the effects of political oppression on the human spirit, and on how the human spirit can triumph." (product description from www.amazon.com)
A novel by the first Chinese recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. I bought the book a long while ago but never managed to read more than the first few chapters, even though I gave it a few tries. I'm really not sure where the problem lies here - it just didn't get me involved enough, I guess. Some books just suck you right in, but some don't, and these days I usually have more unread books on my shelf than time to read them, so often I just move on to the next book instead of forcing myself all the way through the current one when it fails to fascinate me.

I'm about to go on a little shopping spree and will be releasing a few books on my way to the mall. ... this one's going to end up somewhere in the Old Town area. Not sure where exactly yet, but probably somewhere where it's really easy to spot.
