Off to Hakkalina, winner of the 2nd Spring Eqinox draw.

I started to read this book, which is clearly well written-I just wasn't in the mood for the subject matter, so I'm moving it on early.

As a breast cancer survivor who visits a cancer clinic for those dreaded exams I could identify with some of the characters and their feelings. Sometimes i found the scenes too detailed but in the end it was the details that identified each woman's story. Mrs h's eagerness to help not realizing she could use a little help herself. I'll pay a little more attention to fellow survivors when waiting for my next check-up. This book offers a look at how differently woman respond to challenges in life and to the others in their lives. An interesting read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, immensely readable. I thought I hadn't come across this author before only to find her biography of Elizabeth Barrett Browning tucked away on my bookshelf. Set in and around a cancer treatment clinic, the book draws an intimate portrait of the lives of the patients and women working there. It is never sentimental or cloying but captures perfectly the fear of the unknown that any serious illness brings and how people deal with that fear for better or worse. The characters connect readily with the reader; some are thoroughly disagreeable...Mrs Hibbert particularly for me. When the new vicar is introduced who has had mental health difficulties, the 'fear' is all the more apparent even though it presents itself invisibly. This is a powerful book at how we as individuals deal with other peoples' illness and highlights our fallibilities in a non-judgemental way.

A book which follows a group of women whose lives all cross those of the others in some way. The most significant way they cross is through a clinic in St Mary's Hospital. Some work there and others are attending the Breast Clinic for checks. I loved this book in which each of these women's lives is gradually unrolled to see why they are how they are. All of them were isolated in one way or another, either physically, mentally or both.
