Will Freeman will do what it takes to score a date. His new plan - join a single's parent group just to meet single mothers. Will invents Ned, his two year old son, and joins SPAT (Single Parents Alone Together). Although he isn't successful at picking up a woman, he unintentionally starts a relationship with Marcus, a 12 year old looking for a father figure. As the relationship between Will and Marcus progresses, Will becomes a positive influence in Marcus' life just when he needs it the most.

In Will's quest to find a single mom to date, he meets twelve year old Marcus. Marcus is living with his suicidal single mom. A relationship develops between Will and Marcus. Will, overtime, helps Marcus to become a more "normal" twelve year old and fit in with his peers. In the process, Marcus gives Will purpose and meaning in his life.
