Journal Entry 6 by MartinaViola at Latina, Lazio Italy on Sunday, December 19, 2010

Possiamo credere al lieto fine oppure no, sta a noi decidere.

grazie della bella lettura! :)

Journal Entry 8 by maracujia at Milano, Lombardia Italy on Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Journal Entry 10 by maddap at Milano, Lombardia Italy on Monday, December 5, 2011
In viaggio verso mickymicky.

Arrivato, va un po' in coda...

Journal Entry 14 by tilly77 at Cesena, Emilia Romagna Italy on Tuesday, May 1, 2012
Dall'autore di The remains of the day (l'unico letto, e apprezzato, finora) mi aspettavo qualcosa di più...

Terzo: vado a leggere.

Journal Entry 23 by Tarna at Tampere, Pirkanmaa / Birkaland Finland on Wednesday, April 23, 2014
I'm sorry it took me this long to read Nocturnes. I loved the opening story, Crooner but then... I truly struggled through Come Rain or Come Shine. Reading the story took weeks — and I didn't read anything else in between. It is a good story, and well-written, of course, but... I was afraid it would turn out something like Care of Wooden Floors by Will Wiles, but I really should have trusted ishiguro more. Wasn't too fond of the next story, Malvern Hills either, maybe because I didn't much like the first-person narrator. Nocturne has one character we already know from Crooner. And I so enjoyed this story! Loved it. I also liked the closing story, Cellists even if it's ending is a bit too open to my taste. I would have liketd to know a tiny bit more about Tibor today.
All in all, I liked the book and am glad that I read it. Ishiguro is a masterful writer, and I like short stories. Still, I think he should stick to longer prose. That's where he is at his best, IMO.

Thank you so much for allowing me to read this this little book, kaiou!

I was planning to take Nocturnes with me to our local meet-up tonight and give it to -kata-. I didn't, however, make it to there. I'll mail the book asap.

I have slightly mixed feelings about this. All of the novels began very interestingly and I had high hopes for them but somehow the endings were always a bit disappointing. Too much was left open. And usually I like open endings where the reader is trusted to draw her/his own conclusions; these were wide open...
But I enjoyed the atmosphere and the language, so all in all I was happy to read this book!

I'll send the book forward as soon as I get the address.

Journal Entry 30 by Askeladda at Skien, Telemark fylke Norway on Thursday, May 22, 2014
Finished reading! I enjoyed the book, but I agree with former readers; the short stories were too short, I wanted to know more about the characters and what happened to them after the story has ended. They are in a way "too open" in their end. I have never read anything by this author before, now I look forward to read one of his novels, I liked his way of writing and the music flowing in and out if the stories.

The book is ready to travel as soon as I got the next readers adress.

I really enjoyed these short stories, Mr Ishiguro is a very accomplished writer, and is really capable of being successful at so many different genres!
Although I found the main character in all stories slightly similar (well, he plays different instruments!), these are really enjoyable short stories, and I'm very glad I've had the chance to read this well-travelled book.

It took a while, but the book is finally here! Looking forward to reading it when I'm back home

ETA: I read the book in the following order
Crooner - That was quite a harsh look on America and Americans! Beautiful story, though
Cellist - Very nice and true to life"
Nocturne - What was that about? And she again. Dialogues were nice, though
Come rain or come shine - They are all mad!

He capture human reactions with amazing accuracy. One of my fav. writers for sure

The book is on his way to LilyKlip in Germany. Have a nice trip !

Journal Entry 44 by LilyKlip at Leipzig, Sachsen Germany on Thursday, January 8, 2015
Crooners: A nice little story but I didn't like any of the characters: sad old star who gives up the wife he loves for a possible comeback, the wife, a woman whose biggest achievement in life was to marry a star, and a musician who is basically kissing the star's feet.

Come rain or come shine: I agree with Lamilla: They are all mad! And again, I found all three of the characters very unlikeable.

Normally I would stop reading at this point because this doesn't seem to be my kind of thing. But the next story is called "Malvern Hills" and I lived an worked there for half a year in 2000/2001. So, I'm going to give that story a chance.

Malvern Hills: Well, I'm glad I kept reading. I really enjoyed this one (and really wanna go visit Malvern again now!) but somehow I thought the story seemed unfinished.

Nocturnes: Not sure about this one but better than the first two in the book.

Cellist: ?

This was my first experience with Ishiguro (other than having watched but not read The Remains of the Day) and I don't think it's my cup of tea. The writing is good but the stories and the characters do not appeal to me that much.

I'll pass this on in the next few days. Thank you for sharing it!

Five lovely stories, all revolving around the theme of love. I liked how the author used it and also how some of the characters were in more than one story. There’s a depth in Ishiguro’s writing, one that brings out another level of emotions out of the characters, giving more dimension to them. I can’t pinpoint one story that I like more than the others, all had charm and wittiness, as well seriousness and consciousness. I wasn’t disappointed by this collection of stories.

Will pm the next reader to get this book moving!

EDIT: the book is in the mail since July 27, 2015!

Journal Entry 51 by wingMmeClintonwing at South Berwick, Maine USA on Friday, August 21, 2015
This little book of five stories came to me as part of a book ring, so it had to be on top of the to-be-read pile! Basically it was easy to read one story each night. Although all the stories tie together with music (often aspiring musicians), I think the real tie running through all the stories is relationships, frequently troubled ones, into which a third party almost stumbles. The voices of the narrators (all first person, and all the third party who somehow pulls it all together) are yearning and confused and sometimes playful, yet the stories seem sad to me overall. Yes, youth fades and relationships often seem underpinned by mismatches and misunderstandings, but even the music threading through these stories doesn't seem to impart much joy; I think it should! Nice wee book from a talented writer. The next person on the list says she has already read it, so that leaves only Valpete, so I will contact her.
