The Shadow of the Wind

This is a place of mystery...a sanctuary. Every book, every volume you see here has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens.

Amazon Editorial Review:
Hidden in the heart of the old city of Barcelona is the 'cemetery of lost books', a labyrinthine library of obscure and forgotten titles that have long gone out of print. To this library, a man brings his 10-year-old son Daniel one cold morning in 1945. Daniel is allowed to choose one book from the shelves and pulls out 'La Sombra del Viento' by Julian Carax. But as he grows up, several people seem inordinately interested in his find. Then, one night, as he is wandering the old streets once more, Daniel is approached by a figure who reminds him of a character from La Sombra del Viento, a character who turns out to be the devil. This man is tracking down every last copy of Carax's work in order to burn them. What begins as a case of literary curiosity turns into a race to find out the truth behind the life and death of Julian Carax and to save those he left behind. A page-turning exploration of obsession in literature and love, and the places that obsession can lead.

Thank you, Releanna! This goes to the top of my TBR pile.
update Aug 9, 2011: Thoroughly enjoyed this! So interesting that the story revolves around a book that is almost like a character. I'll definitely find someone soon to pass this on to.

Sending this off as a surprise for erishkigal, saw it on your wishlist. Enjoy!
Wow~~what a fabulous surprise!!!! I am thrilled, and eager to start this!! Though it won't be right away, but it is going on my 'short pile', rather than awaiting it's proper turn. And I love the cute sexy postcard, too! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
As my b-i-l says, "Wowza, wowza, WOWZA!" thank you again, stringofpearls for sending this to me~ I loved it! And what a perfect book for bookcrossing~lol :)
in my opinion, Shadow most definitely lived up to the hype. It's one I quickly realized was a book to read slowly and savor, and it's one I look forward to reading again.
In the meantime I shall find a new home for this copy...
I also just discovered people are making trailers for books! There were a number of them for Shadow, but I liked this the best:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=10&v=qmrHTuAfFaA
And I apologize for taking so horribly long to reading/journalling: I moved, and a year-and-a-half later still have a basement full of boxes ( I downsized dramatically, and even after giving away 3/4ths of my 'stuff', still have more than I have room for.) The many many boxes of books are being opened and read one by one.
