From the front flap, "On the streets of the Bowery, you do whatever it takes to survive. It is 1883, and this is the story of two "Bowery Girls"--the pickpocket Mollie Flynn and the prostitute Annabelle Lee. Neither has a family or an education. They live together in an airless, windowless tenement apartment, their time spent stealing or soliciting for money. Their sometime boyfriends are in one of New York's many gangs. Annabelle and Mollie find their pleasures where they can: nights at Lefty Malone's saloon sneaking into the Thalia Theatre, betting on rats and their terrier foes at the Rat Pit. Most of all, they are drawn to the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. The two have a pact: They will earn the money they need to start a new life across the river and leave the fourth ward forever."
