"Powerful... Kingsolver is a gifted magician of words." (Time)
"The Poisonwood Bible" is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce evangelical Baptist who takes his fmaily and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family's tragic undoing and remarkabel reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

I am very disappointed as I just couldn't get into this book!! I have been wanting to read it for such a long time, but I found the way it was written very irritating and I just had to put it down and call it a day!
I know it has been thoroughly enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people so it must just be me?

I hope it travels well and continues to be appreciated and may be I will have more luck next time I try it in a few years' time...?

I finished this earlier this evening. I've got to say I didn't expect to enjoy it, but I loved it! It took me a little bit to really get into it, and then the sheer joy of Kingsolver's writing swept me along.
My first book by the author, but definitely not my last.

And an update to my edits in the entry above - Madpocky has also asked to be skipped, so I've PMed Brookler.

An amazing book, with a powerful story and very vivid characters. I loved the descriptions of the village and its people, and the way the author plays with language. A book that touched me greatly.

I've been looking forward to reading this one for awhile!!! A very interesting story with a powerful storyline about Africa and all the things that people have gone through there. The Price family saga was engaging and kept your attention throughout. The impact that Africa had on each of them was amazing. Thanks for sharing this one!

Mailed this off to mysticalzoe today.

Received this book yesterday..already started reading it, the beginning is already pulling me in, which is a good sign. Will read and finish up when I can. Thanks for sharing.

8-23-11~I couldn't finish this book, not having much luck with bookcrossing books lately, either it's a hit or miss, and past few have been misses for me. I will admit there is way too much preaching in there for me, and God talk, was overwhelming. The Father was retard, and very sexist, so reading about him through the daughters was just mind blowing. The wife was too passive, no way my husband would have talked to me in such a manner. I did not mind the daughters but them talking about the Dad made me cringe. I don't think I will be reading anymore of her books in the near future.

Anyway, I am having a hard time with getting a hold of the next person in line as she doesn't have an email address or a way to contact her, should I pass her over, or wait it out? Let me know please!

This just arrived today. I'm eager to read it but do have quite a few books I need to read before it. So I'm happy to see that as of now I'm the last reader on the ray so I won't feel too guilty. This probably means that I'll prioritize any other ray/ring books I get that have other readers ahead of this one. If someone else signs up just let me know and I'll make an effort to get to this sooner but will read this as soon as possible either way.

Just finished reading this book. Took me a while to make it through but it was definitely worth the read. I enjoyed following the transformations (good and bad) of all of the characters involved in the story.
