Thanks very much for leaving this in the pub Marsala! I met another Bxr there for lunch today, and pounced on this as I love Annie Proulx and this is on my wishlist to read. :-)

You could never describe Proulx's writing as being sentimental. She has a talent for imagining gruesome deaths with not a little black humour mixed in.
This is a novel which reads like a series of short stories focused on families of different nationalities. The accordion is a linking device between them with little overlap.
By the end you feel you know exactly which race the author feels is deserving of some good luck and feels most sympathy for (this is hinted at on the page of quotes at the beginning of the novel) though god knows most of the characters have suffered hardship, abuse, horrific accidents and tragic deaths; the most memorable being the man who trips over his camera film...
If you want a straight talking no nonsense read go for this, though I have to add that you might want to read a section at a time rather than pick it up between other books. You have to wrestle a host of new names and try to keep multiple family relationships straight and might struggle with who’s who if you put it down too often.
