Dramaturg-akteur-regisseur Pieree Labrousse en zijn vaste vriendin, Francoise, ontmoeten tijden shun vakantie het meisje Xaviere die haar plattelandsmilieu wil verwisselen voor het intense kunstenaarsleven van Parijs. Zij nodigen de grillige Xaviere uit bij hen in huis te komen wonen. Hierdoor ontstaat een psychologisch briljant uitgewerkte driehoeksverhouding die steeds dramatischer en dreigender het leven van Franciose en Pierre gaat beïnvloeden. Aan deze conflicten komt een einde wanneer Pierre naar het oorlogsfront wordt geroepen.
