Thought this of possible interest to a partner in this years BC UK’s :-) Not So Secret Valentine Surprise :-) 2010 :-) so I plucked it off a bookshelf in a charity shop yesterday. There is one bookcrosser I was thinking of, a Jane Austen fan I feel, who seems to like period pieces, domestic settings, revolving round close family, relatives and friends set in the early eighteen hundreds and this seemed like it could be just the thing.

Book cover: Damien Knight, the earl of Winterley, is proud, aloof, and tormented by memories of war. Though living in seclusion, he is named guardian to a fellow officer's ward. Instead of the young homeless waif he was expecting, however, Miranda FitzHubert is a stunning, passionate beauty who invades his sanctuary and forces him back into society. Struggling to maintain honor and self-control, Damien now faces an even greater threat: desire.
A bold, free spirit, Miranda has witnessed the darkest depths of Damien's soul-and has seen his desperate need for love. But before she can thaw his unyielding heart, she must endure a terrifying nightmare of her own. . . .

Merciful heavens, this turned out to be frustratingly unchallenging. Great cover shame about the content. There was no mystery, little, suspense and anachronism abounded. I really resented the fact that mystery and suspense were curtailed, because instead the reader is continually having everything explained to them. It would seem we poor sad readers are unable to understand the times and customs of the country without having them made very, very clear, downright insulting. In any event these customs seemed to have been to a greater degree tossed to the wind in order to develop the plot where the author willed it. It felt like anachronisms abounded and believability was hostage to dramatic moment. And of these dramatic moments, I felt there were way too many!

Still if some totally unbelievable light, easy to read fluff in a Regency setting, is desired this fills the bill and even has some steamy scenes to keep the blood flowing.

Hmmm. Sounds like this will fill a quick space between my more usual reading. Thanks for thinking of me.

Well, I was right. This filled up a space after book club reading (ironically the same genre as I normally read this month!) and moving back to my more normal fare.

I used to devour this type of book when I was teenage and early twenties (between studies) and have not touched it since. Glad I tried this again but I think I've lost the taste for it!

Sadly, I did not find it very authentic to the time. The writing seemed to be very predictable and scripted and little credence was felt for the storyline. I can't see me following up this author in the circumstances.

An extremely light, 'no brain' mystery / thiller / romance punctuated with dramamtic occasions usually set up by an uncharacteristically spirited female lead (Miranda) and virtually soft porn descriptions of the love scenes.
