A summary from the cover:
"While searching for the U.S.S. Huxley, a starship missing for over ten years, the Enterprise stumbles across a forgotten colony of humans on a planet called Rampart - a world where fiction, speculation, and works of the imagination are considered the ultimate crime.
A survey team from the planet beams on board the Enterprise to search for "contraband" materials - and suddenly the crew find themselves plunged into the middle of a murderous civil war between a determined band of rebels (called the dissenters) and the planet's ruthless mind police."
Running time is 90 minutes. One audio cassette.
Featuring a dramatic reading by Jonathan Frakes (He's the one who plays Riker in the TV series.)
At times, the premise of this book reminded me of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury (a book that I'd also recommend), but in other ways it's very different. If you like the Star Trek The Next Generation series, it's fun to encounter familiar characters, but it is definitely not necessary to recognize them in order to enjoy and understand the story.
The next paragraph may contain spoilers:
At one point, it is mentioned that the people of Rampart have made their own revised version of the Bible that only contains facts. It is set against the other books with myths and fiction, including the Bible in its usual form. I was surprised that the author seems to set up a false dichotomy here, since the Bible is more like a mix of history and myth to bring across its message. And of course even fictional books often are based on historical events, true stories, etc. I guess this would make a good discussion point, but doesn't take away from the overall interest of the story.

This reminded me of the Science Fiction audio books I used to listen to on my walkman when I was about 10 or so... (Wonder where they are now?...)
Well, I'm not really a Star Trek fan, but I had lots of fun listening to this on my way to work last week...

Received this from christina82 a couple of days ago. Thanks!
This is almost embarrising to admit but I really liked this book. I've never watched Star Trek and I only have a vague idea who the characters are, but I do love a good science fiction book and this one had all the right elements to keep me entertained for the 90 minutes it lasted.
The background noise was a bit irritating at times but at other times it help set the mood of the scene.
