Review from Amazon.co.uk
Katy Carr is untidy, tall and gangling and lives with her brothers and sisters planning for the day when she will be 'beautiful and beloved, and amiable as an angel'. An accidental fall from a swing seems to threaten her hopes for the future, but Katy struggles to overcome her difficulties with pluck, vitality and good humour.

This story brought back so many memories! At first I couldn't remember what happened, but by the time Katy had her accident I did remember. It was nice reading it again. This story contains some of life's lessons and inspires you to be at your best all the time for the sake of others and yourself.
I had quite forgotten that old saying that Dr Carr told Katy:
"For the want of a nail the shoe was lost,
For the want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For the want of a horse the rider was lost,
For the want of the rider the battle was lost,
For the want of the battle the kingdom was lost,
And all for the want of a horse-shoe nail"
Or in other words,
"Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today"! (Thomas Jefferson)
All in all, a very nice little story. Sad in places, but also with lots of happiness, too.

I enjoyed meeting everyone this evening, and I hope we can do this again the next time I'm in the UK!!

Picked up at the Chelmsford BC meet up. One of my friends had been talking about this just a few days ago and I'd never heard of it so it must have been fate that it then arrived on the table in front of me. Thanks for sharing.

Bet you're all surprised to hear from this book again! :-D
It's one I didn't read when I was a child and have remained curious about so, when I spotted it in Brighton's Free Shop at the Open Market today, I picked it up. Imagine my surprise to see the BookCrossing sticker on the front. It's the first time I've ever accidentally found a wild release!
I'll read and release, so watch this space...

I enjoyed the earlier sections, where the complexity of the characterisations and the celebration of the children's exuberance, enabled me to bear the dated moralising and gender expectations. Once Katy does what Katy does though, the sanctimonious viewpoint, and the assumption that I'd think it a good outcome that Katy learns how to manage a home and becomes a self-sacrificing mother figure, at the expense of her effervescent vivacity, made finishing the story a chore.
Nonetheless, the characterisations and the value placed on girls' education and children's freedom to play means the book has stood the test of time better than many.
