Read in February 2022. Having just finished The Autograph Man, I felt the ending was rather flat, but the majority of the book was wonderful, even if the protagonist Alex-Li was extremely unsympathetic. I think the thing I enjoyed most about it was that, despite not liking Alex, I was drawn in by the emotion. At no point was I pulled out of the narrative by an awareness of the writer. Zadie Smith is famous for being a Black female author from London, but she wrote the character of her Jewish British-Chinese male protagonist so perfectly, with all his obsessions and insecurities, that I felt I could identify fully with his thoughts, feelings and insecurities, even though much of those thoughts, feelings and insecurities were obnoxious.

I actually read this book in Dutch, but some of the translation made me think that they had missed some of the nuances, so I found a free version online and compared some of the passages that felt 'off'. The disadvantage of reading a free version of the book online is that it misses out the typographical insertions such as a reproduction of John Lennon’s autograph and the forbidden name of God in Hebrew. Luckily for me, I had the hard copy of the book in Dutch to refer to. In English the language is much richer and more authentic, particularly when Zadie Smith reproduces slang or the accent of a West Indian railway ticket inspector. Reading Zadie Smith’s text, I can clearly hear the woman’s accent. In the Dutch translation, that is not the case at all; the translators merely changed the ending of the past participle of verbs from -en to -on to signify a foreign accent.

One of the plot points is that Alex is supposed to say Kaddish for his father. EPILOGUE: Kaddish
After all Alex’s reluctance to say Kaddish, it seems it is remarkably similar to the Christian Lord’s Prayer. As an ending to a novel, it was rather anticlimactic.
