I did try to collect books that I've read & particularly enjoyed, but as I need a considerable number, this wasn't always possible.
This book is one of those but isn't my copy. My original journal entry was:
"
Loved this. Saw Kate Atkinson at the Edinburgh Book Festival in the summer (2008?) & she read a few excerpts. Just had to put down the book I was reading & turn my attention to this one. Flew through it & thoroughly enjoyed it.
It follows on from Case Histories which introduced some of the characters, in particular, our hero, Jackson Brodie. That doesn't mean that you need to have read the first, but having done so will add to the enjoyment. Set in Edinburgh during the festival, various strands of story emerge, tangling the characters together until the final denouement. Most strands complete, some... not quite so, so you'll be relieved to know that a third (and just recently, fourth) book was written: When will there be Good News.
I believe that the BBC are making a series of Case Histories - if successful they may well move onto this and the other Jackson Brodie based novels.
As always with Kate Atkinson, a beautifully crafted book that works on many levels.
"
Thank you for picking up this book & for helping to celebrate my birthday in this way. I hope you enjoy reading it & look forward to reading your journal entry & those that follow.
I will try & update these release notes with the actual details ASAP after release.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
I loved the book even more. Jackson Brodie is such an interesting character & I couldn't help but want good things for him - only to read of all the bad things the befall him! Living in Edinburgh, it was wonderful to read about a familiar place & made me feel part of the story. I could have been another face in the festival crowd thronging past Jackson Brodie...
This is the first book I've read by Kate Atkinson. Her way of getting inside the thoughts of all her characters is masterful, beguiling, & offers the reader the chance to empathize, or at least understand, their actions & attitudes. There are moments of surprising humour too, as well as pathos which is never over-played. And how cleverly Atkinson drops her twist at the very end. I'm keeping my eye on respectable middle-aged Edinburgh ladies from now on!
A book that entertains, informs, & draws back the veil on the secret thought-life we all keep so hidden, this is a great novel that appeals to both those who love the genre & lovers of literary fiction.
Thank you for the chance to read a book I probably never would have. Now where shall I leave it for the next unsuspecting reader...
