Richard Adams, (Watership Down) presents his second novel about Lord Shardik a giant bear. Although I've never read the story, I have an affinity for talking bears, Paddington, Super Ted, Cookie Bear, Fozzie, Rupert and the Berenstains. All talented in their own ways, but Shardik differs He is prepared to frolic around raw skuddies naked. A bare bear in his natural environment. Sure he has the physique for it. But how the censors and critics responded to this fresh approach in animal writing leaves me in tranquil contemplation.
