The story is about a man in the circus, and it is fascinating to read. It took me a while to really get into it, but once I was in, I was hooked. The book was passed on to me by my sister-in-law over Xmas last year, and it is time for it to travel and find new friends!

I've heard so many good reviews of this book, that I have dithered and dithered about buying it myself. The only thing that has prevented me from shelling out the cash is that the author is not Canadian. I do like to support Canadian authors first and there are so many good Canadian books out there that my book budget is easily consumed.

But I don't have a dithering problem when someone else has shelled out. Oh no. I was the first one with my hand up for this book at last night's meeting, so it's come home with me. Thanks for releasing it ValueVillage!

Once I had this book in my hot little hands, I became reluctant to read it. For some reason, I expected a depressing story, set amid poverty and hardship and I wasn't sure I wanted to read a depressing story.

When I finally did crack open the book, I was delightfully surprised. I can't say there was not poverty and hardship. There was. It was set in The Depression. In fact there were many things that could result in a sad and depressing story. The narrator is 93 years old, stuck in a nursing home, quite aware that his days are numbered and quite aware of the continuing failure of his body and mind. His memories of his life in the circus include incidences of mental illness, violence, cruelty, loneliness in addition to poverty and hardship. And yet this story was full of humour and caring, suspense and excitement.

It's a quick read because the story sweeps you along and you want to know what happens next. It is full of memorable characters, both good and nasty. I loved how Jacob in his 90s is juxtaposed with Jacob in his 20s. The ending might have been a little unbelievable but I was delighted to let Jacob have it.

I'll be releasing this book at the Winnipeg "Under the Big Top" Fringe Festival, probably while humming a gounod waltz.
