CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
What to say about this book? It is truly a gem! I wanted to give it a 10 but that leaves no room. While it was a delightful, whimsical book that I thoroughly enjoyed, it did have a silly element in parts that I wish I hadn't felt. This would be a tough one to write without having "silly" appear once in a while, I guess. That being said, I gobbled this book down and was sad to see it end. I feel as if I've lost something by having this book end. I would love to see these charming characters continue in some way but I think it isn't to be (the author died February 2008). It was a difficult subject to write about with such flare and whimsy while keeping the horrors of the islanders experiences present and real. I'm really happy to have finally gotten to it.
About the Authors:
In 1976, inspired by a newfound fascination with Guernsey, Mary Ann Shaffer traveled to the island in the English Channel, only to be stranded there due to inclement weather. Waiting for a thick fog to lift so she could return to London, Shaffer read all the books in the Guernsey airport bookstore. Jersey Under the Jack-Boot sparked a particular interest in the German occupation of the Channel Islands.
Years later, prompted by her book club to write a novel of her own, Shaffer turned to this subject in creating the vivid world of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Told entirely through a series of letters -- because, Shaffer confessed, "for some bizarre reason, I thought it would be easier" -- the novel skillfully renders the characters and concerns of Juliet, Sidney, and the other residents of Guernsey who have just emerged from the horrors and hardships of the Second World War.
Born in 1934 in Martinsburg, West Virginia, Mary Ann Shaffer made a career working with books -- as an editor, librarian, and bookseller -- before her death in February 2008. She died knowing that her novel was scheduled for publication and in the good hands of her niece and coauthor, Annie Barrows. Also a veteran of the publishing industry, having been an editor at a textbook company and at Chronicle Books before becoming a writing teacher, Barrow has written nonfiction for adults under the pen name Ann Fiery. Her energetic series for young readers, Ivy and Bean, has received multiple awards, including an ALA Notable Children's Book designation. She lives in northern California.
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is the first novel for both authors. This goes out to Aberpeter for the Valentine exchange 2010. Enjoy! Enjoy!
Cheers,
Poobah1 :^)
Books…Love ‘em and Leave ‘em.
thank you so much for a book off my wishlist!!
Told through letters shared between Juliet, a young English author, her friend, her publisher, and the residents of Guernsey Island we learn the history of Guernsey Island during the occupation of WWII. We learn of, yet never meet, Elizabeth, whose unending positive attitude and large heart gave birth to the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and helped emotionally support numerous residents of the Island during the occupation. Beautifully written and by the time I got to the end felt like I had just read the introduction and was ready for the real story to begin.
I decided to make a bookring with this book. The rules are pretty basic.
1. Journal when you receive the book.
2. Journal your thoughts after you read the book.
3. Pm the next person on the list for their address then journal when you mail the book. Media mail is fine.
Please try to move the book on within a month. If you will be keeping it longer (life happens), please journal or pm me so that I know where the book is. Please be considerate of the people on the list after you who are still waiting to read this book.

Received in the mail today. This was on my wishlist and I'm looking forward to reading it. I should be able to start reading this book by the end of the week.
A great read!! The book was hard to put down. The story is told by many voices through their letters. Since the characters are telling their stories through the written word, I feel they may have been more open and less self-conscious, especially talking to a stranger in the beginning. As previous readers said, I didn't want the story to end.
Thanks for sharing, Aberpeter.

It arrived it today in Baltimore, Maryland. I've got 2 more bookrings in front of it but it looks interesting. Thank you dabercro!
Started and finished on a weekend trip to my beach house in Ocean City, MD.
A splendid and compelling read. It was tough starting out, with the multitude of characters and names, but once I got used to the characters, it flowed much better and I could barely put it down. Juliet is funny as all hell and I just loved the characters' intersections with each other and how the story lines intermingled. The ending was pretty predictable, but not unwanted.
Sent off to esq228 in Bloomfield, NJ via Riderwood, MD today. Happy travels!
Rec'd in the mail a couple days ago and going straight to the top of Mt. TBR. Will read and pass along ASAP. Thanks for sharing!!
What an amazing little book. From the very first word, I was drawn in and could have read a hundred more pages at least! I loved, especially, the telling of the story through letters, as opposed to regular old prose. This one is definitely at the top of my all time favorites list.
Have already rec'd contact info from oldreader and am sending the book on its way today. Happy travels.
arrived today.thanks.next in line to read.edited may 30.My favorite character in this story was not Juliet, but Sidney and Isola. Thanks for sharing this. The research that went into it must have taken quite a bit of digging.

This is one delightful read - perfect for the airport, waiting in doctor's offices, or just as an indulgence. The book consists of a series of letters so that each piece is a self-contained story that builds the tale. As such, you don't need to read for lengthy periods of time, waiting for a break in the narrative. Nevertheless, you will find that you don't want to put this book down.
This one is now ready for a new reader

I loved everything about this reading experience and was sad when the book ended! It made me want to visit Guernsey someday. This is a great epistolary novel -- literate and literary, heartfelt and humane. Recommended!
