This was one of the books I had to read for a literature class in 20th Century British literature. It is the story of Ruby Lennox, who begins her tale of life above a pet shop in England from her conception, in the process looking at the lives of other women in her family. Other than that, I barely remember the book, then again, I barely recall some of the books I read for that class. I do enjoy some literary fiction, but this was not my cup of tea. I read it a few years back, and I thought it was an ok book. I have not reread it since, so I might as well send it on its way to some reader out there. The book won the Whitbread Prize for Book of the Year in 1995. I visited the Whitbread Prize website and found out that the only literary prize Roald Dahl ever won was the Whitbread, so it seems Atkinson is in good company. It was her first novel at the time, and given the prize, I am guessing this is why my instructor chose it for the class. Given the title, I think I am going to try for a themed release and leave it at some museum or gallery. I will post the details when I get it done.

P.S. the URL for the Whitbread Award is http://www.whitbread-bookawards.co.uk/ in case you want to see who else is listed.
