Backcover:
For 15-year-old Michael Berg, a chance meeting with an older woman leads to far more than he ever imagined. Before long they embark on a passionate, clandestine love affair which leaves Michael both euphoric and confused. For Hanna is not all she seems.
Years later, as a law student observing a trial in Germany, Michael is shocked to find Hanna in the dock. The woman he loved is a war criminal. Much about her behaviour during the trial does not make sense. Hanna must answer for a horrible crime, but she is desperately concealing an even deeper secret...

Interesting book - the secret was a surprise and an excellent one!

This book offers an insider look into the Nazi-time of Europe in the 1940s. I thought that this subject would have been covered exhaustively already but Schlink manages to bring yet another viewpoint into daylight. The story is so persional and still so generic that it boggles your mind for a long time afterwards.

I visited Berlin August 2009 and was impressed with the city: so laidback, open and fun - and yet with such a dark history. We are too far from the wars to really remember what the holocaust was all about. And I yet wonder if we learned anything? Can it happen again? Would we allow it to happen again? Are we sisters and brothers to one another or greedy beasts?

I highly recommend this read. I'm happy I read the book before seeing the movie; looking forward to see Kate Winslet in Hanna's role.

Thanks halonhakkaaja for sharing this book!
