Before the Frost. A Linda Wallander Mystery.
17 journalers for this copy...
I love Henning Mankell, this one is from the point of view of Linda Wallander, newly fledged police officer and daughter of Inspector Wallander. I enjoyed it very much and liked the shift in perception, even though reading about the more shadowy side of her father was something that I found a little uncomfortable, but that's because I like him so much!
Going into my first bookbox.

I'd never read anything by this author before so both the Wallanders were new characters to me but the blurb from the book suggested that it would be a book I'd enjoy & be something to get my teeth into! That blurb was as follows...
In woodland outside Ystad, the police make a horrific discovery: a severed head, and hands locked together in an attitude of prayer. A Bible lies at the victim's side, the pages marked with scribbled corrections. A string of macabre incidents, including attacks on domestic animals, have been taking place, and Inspector Wallander fears that these disturbances could be the prelude to attacks on humans on an even more alarming scale.
Linda Wallander, in preparation to join the police force, arrives at Ystad. Exhibiting some of the hallmarks of her father - the maverick approach, the flaring temper - she becomes entangled in a case involving a group of religious extremists who are bent on punishing the world's sinners.
So did I enjoy it? Yes! An intriguing read featuring two very complicated characters - I think it will take a few more books before I feel like I really "know" them. The horrific murders, fires & disappearences kept me entertained but it was also very much about the relationship between a father & daughter - not only Kurt & Linda's but of Anna & her missing father too....a good read, thanks for introducing me to these two platypussj!
Read as part of the 2010 ULTIMATE CHALLENGE - themed "MYSTERY" read for December.

Thank you very much, Plum-crazy, for sending me the book that belongs to one of the sentences I chose.
It seems I made a good choice, since I some time ago already read this book (Dutch version). Loved it. I think I'll put it on the re-read mount and make it available again later. :-)

Yeah, the ABC roundabout has started. Thanks for offering this Totje2. I have never read a Wallander, but saw a couple of films about him on TV. I think I do not know this yet.
Unfortunately, while I opened the box with a knife, I accidently damaged 3 pages of the book. I put tape on it to repair it. I am really sorry about it. Just to let you know, it was ME who done it.

What a great book. Thanks for chosing it for this roundabout. This Linda Wallander story was much better then the Kurt Wallanders I have seen on TV. She is a much nicer persen then her father. But often I thought she was so stupid to put herself in such danger. Anyway it was a very exciting book!
Now travelling to the next participant of the ABC-roundabout.

I've never read any of the Kurt Wallender series but I've enjoyed the TV programmes both in Swedish and English. However I never knew there was a Linda Wallender series. I thoroughly enjoyed it although at times I thought she was a little bit stupid. Also the ashtray incident annoyed me - it may have been to show she's quick tempered like her father but a trainee police officer, in a police station - slightly worrying if she can't control her anger.

Had to treat this book with care as it is starting to come away at the spine just before the half way mark. Hope someone in the ABC Roundabout can repair books as it would be a shame to loose it. All I have is tape - not a good idea for spine repairs in my experience :)
Posting this on at the weekend.

As I read this book's German translation a while ago I was thinking "OK, you'll start reading it again and most probably you can send it to the next soon", but that was not the case. Sure, I remembered the story's outline, but not all the small details - so I read it all again. And, once again, I have to say: I really enjoy reading Mankell's Wallander stories! This once, even though it was a Linda Wallander and not Kurt Wallander mystery was no exception!
Linda is waiting to start her work as a young police officer in Ystad when not only animals are burnt but people - and especially a friend of hers - disappear and reappear. How and if all these events are linked it the task Linda, her father and all other police officers have to find out.
I tried to handle this book with as much care I'm capable as it falls of its spine...

'B' in the alphabet roundabout... only four more to go. I didn't really get on with this, which I think is partly due to the very boring style of the translation (can't comment on the original, obviously) and partly to coming in late in a series I'd never read before, and not finding the characters very sympathetic. I did start to get interested towards the end as the plot came together, but were it not for the fact that this is a ring book I'd probably have given up a long time ago. The animal violence scenes, while effective, weren't tied in well to the rest of it, and seemed to have been put in only to shock; similarly, I wasn't convinced by the cult aspect. Not inclined to find the rest of the Wallander series, I have to say.

Loved this and went on the internet to see if there is more in this "Linda Wallander" series (since the book was written in 2002, you would think so). But I found out that Mankell never wrote any more Linda Wallander books because the actress who played Linda on Swedish TV committed suicide. To read more see here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/dec/27/wallandar-hemming-mankell-tv-books-detective
My husband has an idea how to fix the book, but I'll have to wait for my trip to the US in April in order to get the glue he needs. If we can fix the book it will go travel again. If not, it will just have to catch dust on my book shelf.
