Hidden in the heart of the old city of Barcelona is the 'Cemetery of Forgotten Books', a labyrinthine library of obscure and forgotten titles. To this library, a man brings his ten-year-old son, Daniel, one cold morning in 1945. Daniel is allowed to choose on book and from the dusty shelve pulls The Shadow of the Wind by Julian Carax. But as Daniel grows up, several people seem inordinately interested in his find. What begins as a case of literary curiosity turns into a race to find out the truth behind the life and death of Julian Carax and to save those he left behind.

Update 7.6.2011:

I've read the book some weeks ago during my trip to Boston. First I planned to release it afterwards in the States but then I had much less time to read than I had thougt so it travelled back to Switzerland, to go on a trip oversea again last week...

Like everyone I know I loved the book :-).
First of all I think it's great how Zafon tells a story that seems to be a bit mystical and incongruent with reality, but in the end everything shows up real and at least possible. The only unrealistic element remains Carax surviving the fire...

Carlos Ruiz Zafon takes the reader on a slow, mystical journey starting with the Cemetery of Forgotten Books to reveal the mystery of the cryptic Julian Carax.

Even though I found Daniel's quest to learn more about Julian Carax a bit obsessive, I very much enjoyed this book and the parallels between Daniel and Julian's lives. The slow unveiling of the story and introducing what initially seems to be insignificant characters who end up playing a larger role in the outcome of the story was masterfully woven. My only disappointment is that I let this book sit in Mt TBR for nearly 13 years! I wish I would have read it sooner.
