I adored the style of this book, the way it unfurls a story with pieces being revealed gradually, just as we tend not to get everyone's life stories all at once in real life either.
And don't be put off if you didn't like the film, I think the book is very different.

I really loved the movie! The landscapes, the passion, the tragedy... I cried so much in the end!
I´m curious to read the book and see if it stirs up the same emotions.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

This wasn´t an easy book to read. I had to paste the bits and pieces to understand the characters and their actions. I must confess that I sometimes got lost and it was the recollection of certain scenes of the movie which helped me out. The book is quite unique, indeed, different from anything I have read before.

Just received this a couple of days ago as part of the favourite book roundabout. Of course I've heard of this book but I've never read it or seen the movie so I'm not sure what to expect.

Journal Entry 5 by Nice-Find-Books from Dickson, Australian Capital Territory Australia on Sunday, February 28, 2010
A well written book with some lovely prose, however I did find it a little slow and at times hard to follow. I had to pick it up and make myself get back into it at times.

The book arrived in Stavanger on a nice sunny day, the spring is on it's way & nearly all the snow has gone.

I started this book - and realized that I have read it before. Sometimes I'm just a real scatterbrain.

So this JE is what I wrote the last time a read the book:

I have seen the film at some point, but can't really remember much about it.

I liked this book, it is quite slow going. I find the four characters in the book and their interactions interesting to follow, I want to keep on reading to know how things do devlepoe for them. All the love they experience and all the pain.

This book goes into two of my personal challenges. It is book no.156 of the 1001 books you should read before you die and the author is originally from Sri Lanka.

my turn, thank you

I'm sorry, this one is wasted on me. I'm a person who prefers Calvin & Hobbes to fine art and this is definitely at the fine art end of the scale.

I enjoyed the film so hopefully I will enjoy the book. I will read as soon as I am able and pass it on.

I really enjoyed this book. I have seen the film which I enjoyed even though it was very long and slow. I found the book moved along more smoothly whether it was because I knew something of the story first or not I am not sure.

I can see why it has become a favourite.

Sorry for delay in entry. Received this as part of the Favourite Book Roundabout. Thank you! Can't wait to get stuck in and offer my humble thoughts with others.

Wow. I can see why this is a literary classic and a must-read. Although the pacing is markedly slow and narrative decidedly non-linear, I don't think it got in the way of my enjoyment of the book. You cannot help but be emotionally invested in the characters throughout their development. Now to see the film to see how they stand against each other :)

just received the book in the mail, will read it soon.

Journal Entry 15 by winggrovalskiiwing at Zehlendorf, Berlin Germany on Thursday, September 23, 2010
I had a hard time getting into the book. The beginning seemed rather confusing. But after a while, it really started getting interesting as the stories of the lives of the different characters got told. All in all a good book, but maybe not my favorite.

I'm having issues with release notes today. I mailed the book to LiniP today but can't make the release note right now.

Got the book in the mail when I came back from my holiday. I have started reading the book and so far I really like it, especially the way the new characters are introduced and included in the story. Will write more once I have finished.

Journal Entry 17 by LiniP at Schwäbisch Hall, Baden-Württemberg Germany on Monday, October 18, 2010
I truly enjoyed reading this book even though it was sometimes difficult to follow the changes in time. I especially liked the description of the relationships of the four people in the villa.

Finished (and greatly enjoyed) during my holiday in Greece. I loved the characters, so well shaped, and the poetic prose that accompanied their path. This is so different from other war- or post-war novels I've read. Less heroism, more humanity and emptiness, more of the sense of destruction such conflicts bring along.

Thanks for making me a part of this book's journey. i also loved to see it was a part of the Favourite Book Roundabout - such interesting and mixed reviews!
