A nameless Saudi woman starts sending out a weekly email highlighting the doings of a group of female friends from the "velvet" - the highest - level of society. Although they come from good families with plenty of money, opportunities for travel etc, their lives are full of the same worries as other women of their age - studying, how to find love, friendship - and also of the constraints of their society. We see them try to pick a path between personal fulfillment and matching their families' and society's expectations; I was aware of quite a lot of the issues they face such as the terrible shame of divorce, etc, but I think the attractive chick-lit cover might well bring new readers who would learn quite a lot. The women are feisty and see their men clearly in the end, and there are no sugary-sweet happy endings or silly coincidences. A really good read, a celebration of friendship, and some important issues are highlighted.
I'll be offering this on a bookring soon.

I feel like reading this is my guilty pleasure at the moment, along with chocolate eggs for breakfast! I don't usually read chick-lit though have been choosing some for light reads lately. This is quite interesting, though nothing really surprising since I recently worked with a lot of Muslim women. I hate the 'tinsmithing' that I've just read about one of the women undergoing. It makes me feel nauseas but then I'm a wuss!

Recieved with thanks! Looking forward to it!
I'm sorry I've had this sat on my shelf for so long. A classic case of life getting in th way of bookcrossing. It is now at the top of my TBR pile...
I enjoyed reading this book, and feel like I have learnt something about Saudi Arabian culture (I didn't know much at all before, so I would have been disappointed if I didn't learn anything at all). I don't normally choose to read chick-lit, but the unfamiliar culture and brief chapter/e-mail style held my attention well. I'll certainly be recommending this book to anyone who is looking for something a bit different/unusual for summer reading.
Sorry it took me so long to read this one! I'll be posting it on to Candy-is-Dandy today...
Thanks for sharing!

Arrived today! Thanks Peamartian and Lyzzy for sharing.
I'm sorry I have sat on this for much too long.
I found it a bit of a struggle as it was a bit too chicklit in style for my tastes. I did find myself interested in each girl's story but found I was just getting into one when lead off down another road and though this doesn't always bother me I found it too disruptive in this book - the email introductions didn't help there either.
I do find books about the life of Muslim women very interesting and have read a number of them, fiction and non-fiction. I didn't feel this was one of the best though it seems to be popular and as Lyzzy says may bring a new insight to some readers (I sound so condescending and don't mean to).
Thanks for sharing LyzzyBee. I have PM'd the next in line (Kitten99) for her address.

Received today in the post - thanks!
Sorry everyone...the book arrived in Nottingham a few days ago, but only managed to get hold of it today. I will start it this weekend and hopefully will continue its journey soon...thanks for letting me join in!
I couldn't finish this book...somehow it was too chick/lit for my taste, and could not relate to any of the protagonists. I did try several times to persevere, taking extra time to make sure I wasn't reading it at the wrong time, but alas, nothing helped. In the meantime, another ray has arrived, and I believe it is time to let the girls and their stories move on.
I have PMed ChrissyHam for her address and the book will be on its way soon.

My postwoman delivered it directly in my hands today. Thanks YowlYY !
I don't think it's chick-lit. I take it more as the sad true life of the wealthy or not so wealhy Saudi girls. I happened to visit in the neighbouring countries and see the empty eyes of the rich poor girls.
I already have grovalskii's address, so it w'll be mailed asap.

the book arrived in the mail while I was on vacation. will try to get to it soon.
Great book! I really enjoyed reading it. Easy writing style, it was a quick read. I very much enjoyed the inside into Saudi culture. Now it would be intersting to read something about women in Saudi Arabia who are not as rich and spoiled as these 4 women!
I contacted Miss-Owl but have not heard back from her. Her profile says that she doesn't want to sign up for any more rings or rays right now, but it doesn't say what she wants to do about rays that she already signed up for. I'll wait a bit longer to see if she responds, otherwise I'll pass on the book another way. Maybe I'll offer it up for a ray again. It's definatly a book worth passing on!

I discovered that the person next in line for the "Favorite book of 2011" roundabout has this book on her wishlist so she'll be getting 2 books this month. :-)
Thanks a lot for this wonderful surprise! I'm very much looking forward to reading this book... It'll have to wait for a while, though.
Kommt mit in die "Platz-schaffen-Kiste".
