"Set in Burma during the British invasion of 1885, this masterly novel by Amitav Ghosh tells the story of Rajkumar, a poor boy lifted on the tides of political and social chaos, who goes on to create an empire in the Burmese teak forest. When soldiers force the royal family out of the Glass Palace and into exile, Rajkumar befriends Dolly, a young woman in the court of the Burmese Queen, whose love will shape his life. He cannot forget her, and years later, as a rich man, he goes in search of her."

Journal Entry 3 by okyrhoe at Book Box, A Bookbox -- Controlled Releases on Tuesday, December 21, 2010

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
On its way by post to MathGirl40. Enjoy!
This book arrived today. I'd read Sea of Poppies last year and thought it was fantastic, and I've wanted to read more by Amitav Ghosh since then. Thanks for the book and the card, okyrhoe!
I love Amitav Ghosh's writing and thoroughly enjoyed this saga that spans over a century and covers a wide area that includes Burma, India and Malaysia. My only slight criticism is that Ghosh tells the story from the points-of-view of so many characters that it's difficult to truly connect to any one of them. Overall, this was a richly detailed and entertaining story that I would definitely recommend to fans of historical fiction. Thanks again to okyrhoe for sending this my way.
Got this from Mathgirl40.
I found it hard to connect with this book. The characters were so superficially sketched that I couldn't connect with the book. The story spanned to large a time frame and too many people to allow me to really "get into" the book. But still interesting from a history point of view.

Back in my hands now. Will send it travelling in a future bookbox.
I put this into a bookbox bound for Calgary. I love Amitav Ghosh's writing, and I hope that one of the Calgary BookCrossers will also enjoy this book!
I enjoyed the story but struggled a bit - having to backtrack sometimes - because I had so little spare time that I was reading in fits and starts. Wonderful characters and sense of place.
This book is back in my possession. It will find a place on my Mnt. TBR.
This book will find a new reader at the November meet-up of Calgary
BookCrossers.
BookCrossers.
Came back from the November meet up with a heavy bag!
Interesting setting and very interesting to hear things from the Indian/ Burmese perspective. Interesting to hear how the Indians were brought there and then the challenges they faced. My husband read this book first and really enjoyed it. Glad I finally got around to it.
I am taking this in my big pile of books to the March meet up for the Calgary Bookcrossers at Cravings.

Megami-no-ushi convinced me to bring this book home from the meeting even though my TBR is outrageous. I hope to get to it sometime in the next decade or so ;)
This one has been on my TBR shelf for over 3 years and with the crazy amount of reading I do for work, I am feeling like I may never get to this one, so I am going to get it moving again.
Releasing into the Bullet Book Box hosted by Fracula and myself, Minerva101, to share with our Calgary Bookcrossing group.
Happy Reading!
