reading and shame in post-war Germany. Michael Berg is 15 when he begins a long, obsessive affair with Hanna, an enigmatic older woman. He never learns very much about her and when she disappears one day, he expects never to see her again. But, to his horror, he does. Hanna is a defendant in a trial related to Germany's Nazi past and it soon becomes clear that she is guilty of an unspeakable crime. As Michael follows the trial, he struggles with an overwhelming question: what should his generation do with its knowledge of the Holocaust? "We should not believe we can comprehend the incomprehensible, we may not compare the incomparable... Should we only fall silent in revulsion, shame, and guilt? To what purpose?"

Good book that will stay in my thought for quite a while. I'm glad I was born when I was and not 10 years earlier and didn't have to experience any of the war.
Will be sending this off to someone I've owed a book to for ages and I keep thinking when I start a book I'll send this one and then by the end I decide not to.

Safely received today thanks.

I read this a year or two ago around about the same time as The Invention of Curried Sausage which is also set in WWII Germany and having seen the film recently think I might have got the 2 confused, so will look forward to reading this again soon.
