The Jungle

I should have read this in high school like most Americans, but the track I was on didn't include this. I wish it had. I absolutely LOVED this book! Not in an "it was so uplifting" way, but in an "it was written so well and you couldn't put it down" way.
The story follows a family of immigrants trying to make their way in Chicago in the early 1900s. It has a definite Socialist bent to it, but I think if you don't get caught up in that the book is a compelling commentary on America of the day. It is definitely worth reading, at least once!
