Really enjoyed this one. Mags has got to be one of the most likable characters I think I've ever come across in a chick-lit book. She's a funny but slightly crazy ex-goth, who trys to do whats best for her and everyone around her but ends up making it worst. I think 80% of the chick lit I read is set in Ireland.

This arrived safe and sound--I'm so glad it made it, it looks like a great, fun read. This will be the second book I've read by this author. The first was The Seven Secrets of Happiness, which I really enjoyed, so I'm looking forward to this one as well. Thanks again, redfox5, for sending it so far!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

It's a funny thing, because I very much enjoyed the other two books I read by this author--The Seven Secrets of Happiness and The Tea House on Mulberry Street. But for some reason I could not get more than a few chapters into this, despite my tries. The characters just did not gell with me. So I decided to mail it out now to the BCer I'd reserved this for who had requested chicklit a few months ago, rather than let it continue to languish on my shelf.
Posted today to Germany...hope you enjoy the book! Sharon Owens is someone who in my opinion puts depth and meaning even into a light story, so I think this will be good!

Thank you very much for the book which arrived in Austria now!

26.10.2018:
The plot sounded rather fun, and was pretty good to start with. Mags was quite a fun character to read, and her first person narrative made very pleasant reading, which stumbled along, describing Mags' life and her thoughts as well. But all of the other character in the book (perhaps apart from Mags' husband Bill) were all hideous - they were whiny, selfish, rude and generally not very nice people! Julia was the worst offender, and you have to wonder why Mags' would still stay friends with someone who treats her like that! She was very selfish and quite a user towards Mags. Her background is explained (quite extensively I must add) by Mags early on in the book, but this didn't make me any more sympathetic to her really.
Other characters through the book included Mags' sisters, Jay; Julia's boyfriend, and the odd wedding couple, which were all not really nice.

Now, the awful characters isn't my biggest gripe with the book. I had a real problem with the amount of narrative in the book. Usually when I read a book, I expect to have an equal amount of dialogue and narrative from the author, but this book was so heavy with the narrative, it became rather hard going after a wile. I also didn't like Owens' writing style a lot. So many repetitions and the funny meant but rather ignorant comments on issues like eating disorders, politics, and other details really annoyed me. It was supposed to sound cool, but sounded rather stupid and narrow minded to me.

The story was pleasant enough, with a couple of twists and turns throughout, not to mention a quite explosive ending, but it just didn't really do it for me unfortunately. I felt it was a little bland, far too narration-heavy, and the title didn't really make much sense for me - where was Mags' revenge?! I couldn't see it anyway.

PLEASE NOTE: This book was published in Ireland under the title of The Trouble With Weddings - which is a way better title in my opinion.
