The other book that I read this year about Venice. It is semi-historical, and starts in the 16th century during the sacking of Rome. A high class courtesan and her assistant escape to Venice, where her mother was born. The two enmesh themselves into life in Venice through cunning and beauty. Their friendship surpasses all obstacles, so in a way, this book is about love.
